I have set a Goal! My goal is to feed year round..... Just to see if it helps with antler growth. Every 2 weeks I head to the feed store, then down to camp. I'm feeding "Deer Chow", "Sweet Feed" mixed with corn, Salt mixed with rice bran. I want to know.....

A. Is that going to make a difference?

B. Do any of you guys do that?

C. If so, what are you feeding?

I don't but have been saying for a month I am going to start. I hope to start in the next week or so when I'm at camp for turkey hunting/scouting. I have a few friends that swear by feeding all year.

A. I think it will help them but they still hit the natural browse first if it's there or at least that's been my experience. As far as making a difference antler wise....that I'm not sure it does.

B. Feed year round and have for several years now.

C. Food-plots and a mix of Sweet Feed, Rice Bran, Purina Deer Chow (when I can find it), Record Rack and salt. Might throw in a little bit of corn during the cold months.

We do, about 5 of our club members including myself have been doing it for about 5 years now and yes we believe it is helping. The area we are feeding in is about 1400 acres and it seems like in the past two years the number of deer we see and the size of the racks have both increased. We started off feeding soybean meal that cost $150/ton and did that until it went to $412/ton and now we are feeding a mixture of rice bran, corn, molasses,& mineral. The protein is not as good as the soybean meal but they are still eating about 100#/week. They usually stop eating it as much in the spring when the browes is young and tender but from mid summer through mid april they love it.

Here is the simplest way imo to look at this subject. A deer takes nourishment to it's body for growth and development of bone and muscle then antlers. For the doe's sake she will have better lactation and abilities to raise her fawns if she has good nutrition. Also a thing to remember is a fawn gets alot more genetics from the doe than the buck. So to answer your question

a.) Yes it will make a difference

b.) Yes I have been in a few camps that had plots year round, and on my private places where I hunt.

c.) Summer-clover, peas, and am trying different brands of deer feed this year in the slingers. oh and mineral blocks with block topper.
Winter- A mixture of oats (buck forage), wheat, brassicas, and in the past corn. Probably gonna fade out the corn and go with a deer feed. I also use rice bran.

I want to get some "forage" soybeans to try this summer. If anyone knows where or what brand makes these I wouls like the info.

I just planted 100 lbs. of Hutcheson Soy Beans Friday. I wanted Laredo's but the feed store couldn't seem to get them. I've planted soy beans for the past couple of years now and they seem to be a pretty hardy plant. Deer will snip them off for sure but the beans keep coming back. They do good in the heat, but none the less, the drought of August usually gets mine. I paid 25$ per bag for these. So far I've gotten 100 lbs. of soybeans and 700 lbs. of lime out. Soil samples are priceless. :thumb:
