I’ve got three dog proof traps set for coons using marshmallows as bait, and have caught several. However, I think they’ve become trap-shy, and I need to change baits. Problem is, the neighbors have several cats; if I change to a fish or meat bait they might get trapped also. Any ideas?

A coon will get dp trap shy fast. Move them to another spot use a different bait. I run into this alot trapping at the fish hatchery. Try some type fish. Use a dog proof that as a one way trigger. U are less likely to catch a cat. If u use a push pull trigger. U are more likely to catch one. That said i done a nuisance control job. Lady had 30 cats i caught 14 coons and 6 oppsums. They were eating the catfood on the front porch. Only cat i caught was in a live trap. If u catch a cat in a dp. Its not going to hurt it. All the years of using dog proofs. I never caught a cat yet.

Use tuna fish
Cats, coons, rats.....no difference....they all need to go. :giggle:

I don't think house cats are attracted to burnt corn, cut up a corn cob and scorch it. And...start thinking about snares. Modern snares allow an untargeted animal to be released unharmed. Check out "Sullivan's Line" on the net and buy his book "Snaring 2000". Has everything you need.
I'm not sure about the legality of selling live coon to houndsmen. Might justify the price of a cage trap. These hounds men put the coon in a ball that the hounds push and roll- used to get hounds keyed in on coon.

It depends on what lock u use on a snare. Most cats will choke themselves out on a leash. U take a non relaxing lock. A cat will fight it. Then u will have a dead cat on your hands. Or u take relaxing lock. If the cat gets its front feet off the ground. You will have a choked out cat. I have snared bobcats. They dispatch fast. I use a catch pole on my other bobcats to dispatch them in a foothold.

Best I've used for coons with a live trap is peanut butter. I spread it on the trigger pan, especially on the underside. I've had coons get it off the top of the trigger without springing the trap, not so after I started putting it on the underside, too.
