Pros an Cons of a muzzle brake?

I’m thinking about putting a muzzle brake on my Ruger American 243. Pros an cons? Can you tell if it takes away recoil?

A good gunsmith told me that a "good" muzzle brake, could reduce the recoil approx 20-40%,...but it also depends on the caliber. He said some (brands) muzzle breaks work better than others. I would talk to a good gunsmith that installs muzzle breaks, about how much it would affect your particular rifle....& which brake to use.
I sighted in a friend's 7mm Rem Mag last year for him, model 700....& the muzzle break reduced the normal recoil by at least 20-25%. It was noticeable.

The .243 is a pretty loud cartridge already; adding a brake is just going to make it worse. And I really don’t think you’re going to get enough recoil reduction out of one to make it worthwhile. You’d probably have better luck with a combination of a good recoil pad and the reduced recoil loads.

First off, ALWAYS wear hearing protection if you put a brake on your rifle.

I'm not sure how much difference it will make in recoil, the 243 doesn't have much recoil to start with.

I have one on a 300 Win Mag A Bolt and it is deafening if you don't have hearing protection on. I've shot mine exactly 1 time without muffs and literally thought my ears were going to bleed. They throbbed for about 3 days.

I compete with an AR with a brake on it. Like was said above, it doesn't do anything for recoil but the muzzle never moves. Makes followup shots faster.

Ditto what Mr. C said about the A-Bolt. The great thing about Browning's Brake, the BOSS, is that you can tune it to shoot whatever load you want more accurately. I love mine, but failing to putt muffs on in the heat of the moment, (along with playing in a band, carpentry work and other abuses of my hearing not specified :ROFLMAO: ) has ruined my hearing.
