So this new AGFC rule has given me a good excuse to get a new rifle. Brief online research has me leaning towards the .450 bushmaster. What do you guys think?
No, Your Right.. Good Hunting..I’m struggling to get on board with these new straight wall calibers.. I want to want one… but from what I’m reading, none of them will do what my .444 Marlin will do… am I wrong?
Sounds like you already have what you need.I’m struggling to get on board with these new straight wall calibers.. I want to want one… but from what I’m reading, none of them will do what my .444 Marlin will do… am I wrong?
The 444 is a great round. The trajectory falls off pretty fast after 200yds, and to get there, you will pay a price in recoil and muzzle blast. It carries a lot of energy with that big bullet. Outperforms a 45-70 a little. Some of the smaller straight walls can beat the trajectory by quite a bit, without nearly as much recoil or muzzle blast. They still carry plenty energy to kill a deer out to 200, and some out to 300 with the right bullet and powder combo. The 444 currently has the advantage of being loaded in better factory ammo, like the Hornady lever revolution. But it won’t be long before ammo manufacturers will be producing better loads for the smaller and newer straight walls, like the 360 BuckHammer. If you handload factory ammo is a mute point.I’m struggling to get on board with these new straight wall calibers.. 100%.I am not seeing many that exceed or equal what a good charge of Blackhorn behind a 300 grain bullet does.
There is just the reliability that is the attraction to me.
You ever shot a doe only to realize she was being followed by a buck? Now all you gotta do is cycle and blast!I am not seeing many that exceed or equal what a good charge of Blackhorn behind a 300 grain bullet does.

Then you ain't looking very hard. I've found two loads for 450 bushmaster that equal a max charge of blackhorn 209 with a 300 grain bullet. In fact, they exceed it....because these are shot from a 16" barrel....not your 24-28" muzzleloader barrel.I am not seeing many that exceed or equal what a good charge of Blackhorn behind a 300 grain bullet does.
