I was hoping he got a Mulie.
I was too

I'm 56 ... I've killed a lot of game animals. I've killed a couple of muley bucks but nothing special. I've had two golden chances, one was a high country rifle tag in Colorado back in the day that I should have spend 2 weeks vs 1 hunting it and another a western Kansas muley tag where I was hunting a big special whitetail buck and didn't spend time muley hunting.

The group of 8 we chased day 1 and day 2 ... 1 3x3 was a dandy desert muley and the 4x4 in the group was nice too, either I'd have been happy with. That was the only group with a big muley he'd found and so we switched to water holes. Even the spotting we did, it was mostly coues we found, muley does ... no big muley bucks

maybe 2026 I'll find someplace to mule deer hunt and go and finally get one

I'm thinking bout trying to find one myself in 2026, a muley buck has been at top of my list for nearly 20 years.

its hard to find a trespass fee type hunt which would be ideal IMO

that leaves public lands out west but, tags are harder and harder to get and mule deer decline in the past decade is real

$5000-7500 will get a good mule deer hunt - I'm cheap, I don't want to pay that. Id not have done this hunt had it not been a BOGO type deal with my buddy.

you can get a FCFS tag in November .... you can plan a DIY hunt, it just takes time/effort and then the hunting itself too takes a lot of time/effort

I think it could be done, no idea what % chance of success , that all depends on the hunter .... but there is vast public lands out there

Like Stealthy said, good Muley tags are getting hard to draw. If you had been putting in for AZ those 20 years, you’d be close to an AZ strip tag (where buck in my avatar was taken) and probably could have already got a Kaiban tag.

Yeah I've been researching and will be doing DIY, I'm cheap as well lol. I know I should of done it years ago when point creep wasn't as bad, better muley population density, etc...
