new this year

I baited with peanuts/cashews and bread on Sat last week ... refreshed with peanuts/cashews yesterday

On Saturday I'm baiting with donuts - change 100% what they're getting to eat

will it run them off? invigorate them ? I dunno, we'll see

side note ... I have the laziest bear I've ever seen. I have 400 videos of this bear in just a few nights sleeping on the barrel, next to the barrel, all around the barrel ...... it'll watch raccoons and possums 5' away ....

lazy ass bear

That is a cool video! Diabetic coma maybe...

I think switching it up might be a good plan. This year and last year, when I open bait they hit hard first week. Then seem to get bored or something. I either need to switch up next year like you are trying - or just bait four days before opening day.

bored is what I think - we'll see if it works

Good video. I had one like that one year. He would stretch out on his back in the food and rake whatever he could reach up to his mouth. I made muscadine wine that year and dumped a big pile of skins on the bait. He loved it. Lay on his back and drag them up onto his chest and eat them at his leisure. I expected to have him pegged out by sunset on opening day. Then the acorns fell the day before the season and I never saw him again.

Does anybody here still hunt or spot and stalk bears? Or, is baiting the way to go?
Bears must be as dumb as turkeys.
Go try to kill one in Arkansas by stillhunting and come back and report how dumb they are. Probably not more than a handful killed by archery stillhunters each year. It’s a food and/or water situation for sure. Find the natural food source or the water source and you might have a remote chance. Otherwise, bait is the only realistic possibility.

That seems like an arduous task.

I have killed every legal animal in Arkansas except bear and elk by spot and stalk. We have too many bears in south Arkansas. But it's illegal to kill the wretched vermin.

Me, too. And I’ve killed bear over bait. But I’ve never had anything close to a realistic shot opportunity at a bear by stillhunting. I try it every season, and It’s really tough. And there’s at least a limited bear season in most of south Arkansas now. Go give it a try. Don’t get me started on the elk draw; I’m closing on 30 years in the pot with no love.

I've never killed a bear. I think it would be cool to assume the predator mode and pursue a bear.

Don’t know about the dumb as turkeys part, but I spend a lot of time in bear country and walk up on them fairly regular. Actually got super close to a sow and two cubs on the same day the recent attack occurred, and only about a mile from where it happened.
Baiting is for sure the highest probability method, but I’m gonna climb around the mountains with a bow some this year just for the heck of it. Killed one stillhunting with a muzzleloader years ago, and I’ve let a few walk since that I just didn’t wanna mess with.

That is awesome.

I'd like to give it a try. Dallas county bears love a corn feeder. I'd like to sneak in on one with a bow.
