ok guys, I am new to duck hunting. I own a few calls but my real passion is bowhunting whitetails on public land. I have just gotten interested in duck hunting and I am wondering what a Cutdown call is. All I have ever blow is an old single reed RNT. Had two really nice RNTs and currently cannot find them so looks like I will be in the market for a new call soon.

Its a call that has the toneboard sanded or "cut" down the old timers did it with a ps olt d2 and it wored miracles so now that ps olt is out of business evry one is trying to make a call like the olt. It is hard to blow and very loud!

Gotcha. Hard to blow and very loud. I know i'am new but that sounds useless!!! Lol!!! A call that's easy to blow and can be blown quietly seems much more useful to me. Am I wrong in my thinking?

No not at all, they aren't for everyone...I really enjoy the sound of a echo meat hanger or a rnt short barrel.

lol it sounds useless but all the old timers did it for a reason. every one blew really quiet calls back then so when they started blowin leaves off the tree's the ducks would nearly do a backflip. " that comes from a old duck hunter not me". I dont have a cut down but i want 1 just to see what its all about

The point of a cutdown call is to make a nasty, raspy sounding call that basically has all the top end taken out...........you can blow one very loud without making a ringing hail call........ they take a ton of air to blow and are not very versatile calls. When plastic and wood were the only material available to call makers they were probably the best call made for the timber....

But with modern materials someone that takes the time to learn to actually blow a duck call can buy a moderately priced timber style poly call that can do everything a cutdown call can do+so much more......

contrary to popular belief, if a call is cut correctly then you can do anything you want with it. Also if cut correctly you can blow it easy or hard and the top end not "break" over and squeal. So the stereotype of raspy, badly, growly Cutdown is just the sound most have ever heard because they aren't cut correctly! I know a good friend of mine who can cut any of the aforementioned calls to suit any style! So if you're interested in a Cutdown, find the right person to "cut" it for you!

The entire point of a cutdown call is one that doesn't do everything...... take out the top end so you get more "duck". Similar to the approach of a RnT short barrel.......

Why else would you cut it down?

You've got to remember that these calls were developed when the major calls on the market were Yentzen's and PS Olts (maybe the occasional Dixie Mallard in Arkansas)........ there is a reason the Arkansas style calls took over the market.
