What does dark blood mean?

2027 Views 18 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  deerhunter5746
Tracking a deer tonight and at point of impact there was a CRAZY amount of blood and it was all really dark, a little brighter red mixed in but mostly dark. And hunks of what looked like lung to me. But most lung shots have more bright blood in it. And after about 40 yards this deer quit bleeding, and was shot with a 7 mag, could this have been a liver shot?

Yep. But I've shot them in the toe with my 7 mag and they didn't run off.

Yeah my dad has been using a 7 mag for 28 years and killed well over 50 deer with it an never Lost one he hit until this year....and this is the 2nd one, we switched bullets last year and he's no found of them at the moment ha.

BUT I think this deer is dead it ran in some NASTY stuff, hopefully we will find it in the morning at light.
Good luck bud. I use the ballistic silvertips. They do a lot of damage.

Thts about what I'm ready for, these dudes shoot so fast, sometimes too fast, ballistic tips would help.
you should find it in the light. I have shot deer with abow and liver shot if you didnt push it to soon it shouldnt be far. I waited 45mins and she was 60yrs.

Good luck. post pics if you find it.

I hope so, problem is everybody has to work but my dad tomorrow so he'll be along in the mirning and it's some nasty mess, but thanks and I'll post pictures hopefully
Sure sounds like a liver hit Cody. I bet you find him. Good luck!
Did the blood smell bad? Could be a gut shot....a gut shot will be dark and a little ways on the blood trail you can sometimes smell that nasty gut smell....
Dark blood is usually liver. The light blood mixed in could be some of the muscle blood. Lung definitely would've been bright pink and bubbly.

The chunks you saw were more than likely liver pieces. The deer should die and you should find it if you didn't bump it.

Good luck!
My dad shot one with muzzleloader several years ago and same scene. Dark blood, chunky stuff and lots of both. Trailed it easily a good ways and it stopped. Sadly we never found it. Figured it was liver shot
That's for all the advice guys, just for the record, this one had an imense amount of blood at the site, then for about 40 yards it got less and less then stopped. I don't think we bumped the deer, we cruised a lot last night, but didn't get in the real nasty stuff, not much reason to with it being cold and dark, much better chance in the day light. So hopefully dad will find it this morning, just wish I could go help him look.
Thanks again
The one I killed during the Dec ML looked squarely broadside. I shot right behind the shoulder through the ribs. Deer ran with tail down but didn't hunch up at the shot the blood was really dark and not much of it. It was 100 yds up the hill from where I shot apparently the deer was quartering to me. The bullet went in right where I aimed but exited in the offside stomach. It obliterated the liver. Hense the really dark blood.
No deer, my dad looked from about 7:30-8 this morning until about noon or a little after. I'm going to go down after work and help a little more but now just looking for horns I guess
Liver shot. Deer should be dead. I've done that before and he went to the thickest cover and wasnt moving real fast. Found him just inside a pine thicket.
Wow, I started reading your post and thought someone was posting my predicament!! lol. I shot a really nice buck yesterday afternoon at 40 yards with my 7mag. Looked like a warzone where I hit him, he bled for maybe 35-40 yards and no more blood. I watched him out to about 65 yards and lost him. Really bright good blood!!. Looked for most the day today with no luck.

Wierd thing was, after looking for close to 2 hours last night, my dad and I decided to back out and wait until the morning. But as we left our land, someone had dumped a brand new gut sack right in front of our gate, like possibly rubbing my face in it. We have had some nasty run ins with the neighboring land owners, but I sure would have liked to catch him dumpin my deers guts at that moment. And still had the buck in his truck!! But, maybe it was just a coincidence.

Only the 2nd deer I've ever lost, and this was the 1st deer ive shot with a 7mag. May have to go back to using the ol' trusty BAR ought6!!
