Ultrex on an aluminum boat

292 Views 18 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  jackie53
It it worth the cost putting an Ultrex on an aluminum boat? I have an 18ft Ranger Aluminum. I have found that with very little wind, by the time I catch a crappie, get it off the hook and in the livewell, I am a long ways off my spot. I have been considering an Ultrex for the spot lock feature, but is that really worth the extra cost on an aluminum boat? For you tin rig crappie fisherman, is it worth it?

100% absolutely yes! If I remember correctly, your boat is a 188. I have an Ultrex on mine and I would never want to be without one. Paired with Livescope…..wow! You won’t be disappointed!

I have a Terrova on my Alumacraft and wouldn't want to fish without it. If I am working a shoreline for bass or walleye and I hit a hot spot, putting the electric in anchor-lock keeps me in the zone even on windy days. If I am jigging on points or flats, the anchor-lock will keep me on the fish for as long as they are under the boat. Most spot-lock or anchor-lock electrics aren't precise enough to keep you right on the brush pile but will certainly keep you within 8 or so feet from it.

Cheers.....

Not an Ultrex, but I’ve got a Terrova on an aluminum center console. I use spotlock every time I go out. I mostly bass fish. Being able to sit in one spot without putting out an anchor is a game changer. I’ve had bunches of times that I’ve caught a fish on a point or rock pile, hit spotlock, then sat in one place and caught 20+ bass. Sometimes I wonder how many bass I passed right by before I had a spotlock when I was constantly moving. Now if I catch a fish I’ll sit there for a while. The last time I went out I caught 28 bass in 4 hours without moving more than about 30 yards. Once you get a trolling motor with spotlock you’ll wonder how you ever fished without it.

Clear water,Dingy water,How Deep?..
We were fishing 20' can see a Jig 10'
If you are spooking fish from 30 ft into the wind, I’d say that’s probably user error. Turn that sucker down.
