Guys my uncle has a turnip field that I was think bout picking how do deer do with them? I know I have planted them and they eat the tops before they ever make just dnt know how they might do picked. And would you leave the tops in them thx
When the greens reach a certain stage, maybe temp related, they will mow them down. Least thats what ive seen with my nephews food plots over the last 4 or 5 years.
My FIL always plants a couple of acres of turnips for the deer. He harvests enough to pay most of the taxes on the farm for the year just with them, and there are plenty left for the deer. They'll eat on them some as soon as they start growing, but they'll really hit them once the acorns are gone and the first frost turns them sweeter.
Once it freezes good, the starches in the turnips turn to sugar and the deer will go to town on the actual turnips. They will pull them out of the ground and eat them like an apple.
