Try laying a burlap sack or something over the trap and make it into more of a cubby. Leave a trail of cat food leading into the trap.

There is a trail of corn and marshmallows. These coons wont work a trap with catfood as bait. Seen it too many times, I guess. Will try the burlap - I could see that helping. I bet it is a mess in the morning if you do catch

Always had the best luck with live traps using peanut butter as bait. Smear it on the trigger pan. Especially on the under side of the the trigger pan. I've had them lick the pan clean and not trip it when it's just on the top of the trigger, not so when there's a little on the bottom of the pan, too.

Never tried that. Do you try to conceal the trap or leave it on top of ground?

not in there. Gonna take a ride down and see if he scratched out the bait through the side of trap and check a dog proof

I usually just set them out in the open, if there is a fence or wall around, I may set it beside that, but I've never really tried to hide them. Best record I had was years ago I had 4 pipe feeders out for deer within 2 miles of home, they's been out for years in the same locations and I just filled them up every day, with cattle feed, when I was making my rounds feeding cattle. Coons were getting more than the deer so I gathered up 6 live traps, from friends, and a big jar of peanut butter. In 30 days I caught 66 coons. On one set I had two traps side by side and there was a momma in one trap, 4 little ones in the other trap and 2 little ones trying to get in the traps when I pulled up, got them with a 22 out the truck window.

I need to be trapping some coons again myself. Annoying little buggers got into the trash last week. I use marshmallows and a little sweet horse feed. Doesn't catch the barn cats but gets a coon or possum nearly every time I set it. I'm gonna move a cell cam to watch it for entertainment.

Since the hogs moved put of the county it seems, a suppressed 22lr and thermal are our best bet for getting coons.

if you catch the barn mouser just spray it with the water hose real good. i t wont go near that trap for a year no matter what you bait it with. i usually set it in the barn so i can get the cat early and quickly then put the trap where it will be used.

The raccoons on my back yard feeder get wise to traps pretty quick. If I set a live trap, it's good for one the first night. They wont hardly touch it after that. I've probably been messing with them too long.
My father in law always jokes, "gotta make my mule look the other way before you open that gate. Dont want him to figure it out." That would probably be serious advice for some of these raccoons.

Some of his urban counterparts have it much easier than he does. In fact, they have turned into full-fledged democrats:

My coons are pretty trap shy. This dog proof trap was on the other side of the feeder from the live trap. They wouldnt even eat the marshmallows on the ground. I figure three generations of coons on my place have learned how to live with dog proof and cage traps. I can still catch them in a dirt hole set with conventional traps.

You are correct. I use a tactical 12 ga with red weapon light mostly. The coons will often let you walk up within 20 ft of them at night if you are shining the light in their eyes.

Are your hogs down there in Ogden gone, too?

Coons will get where they wont work a live trap or a dp. After few get caught. The game is up. I would put a dirt hole in. And bed a trap in front of it. Put the bait down the hole. U will catch him . I put my bait on the ground. And set the live trap on top of it. That way they have a harder time getting the bait . Put the live trap trigger over the bait.

That's what I do. Gonna try the peanut butter trick

Yes - I also put my live trap over the bait
For an analogous approach to get them trap shy coons, you just got to bow up and lay with ‘em. You’ll get em SwampCat.
