I carried Copper out this morning and I went ahead and took Cloee (the young cur I got from joker46) just to spend some time bounding with her. We got out there right at daylight and Copper went right to hunting. Cloee stayed with me and we just sat still hoping to see the squirrels start stiring. We never saw any so I started walking them through the area. At one point, she acted like she spotted something and took off. She opened up with this real high pitch yip and so I went to her. I found her climbed up on a pile of logs sniffing a leaning tree so I'm pretty sure she saw one but I couldn't find it. The only other excitement we had is when I kicked up a rabbit right in front of her and she went BEAGLE on me for a little bit. I scolded her and she came back. On the way back through the farm I spotted a big fox squirrel near the road and so I turned Copper back out. He jumped right on the trail and treed it in a big pine tree. I never could find it to shoot it out to him. At least it wasn't a total bust. I think this little girl is going to make a goodun. I hope anyway! :)

My neighbor and I took them "walking" again this morning. Squirrels weren't moving but the dogs still hunted hard. Biggest problem I've found with hunting young dogs when squirrels aren't moving is that they will ALWAYS find something else to hunt. Had a short rabbit race with Chloe until I shamed her. Copper got after some turkeys and spooked them, a gobbler and two hens, off our place. Then he must have found a hot deer trail because her got on it and barked every step and ran out of hearing.

Anyone have a shock collar they want to rent out? :)

Well, I did find an old shed antler from last year while we were out. :thumb:

I would let a young dog run a rabbit. It will learn them to figure a track out If a dog can run a rabbit they can run anything. I would not shock a young dog running any kind of game now. It will probably ruin them. There will be another time to break a young dog from running off game. good luck with them
