Strutters

I saw my first gobbler strutting with hens of the year yesterday afternoon. March 11th they may start early this year. Of course it seems they start earlier every year.

Just from the birds I've seen so far there appears to a bumper crop. Dang I've got the fever.

I dont think there's anything unusual about that, and I'm basing that off what I usually see up here by the MO border.
IMO those gobblers seem to ease into the breeding season. They'll kinda start hanging around the hens, following them, late in the winter. Then things gradually get into breeding behavior.

Sort of like teenagers...:smack:
I have been on spring break and started my scouting to locate birds and try to pattern activity. My cousin and I have been seein to big toms strutting around with around 10 hens on a daily basis over the last week. They have been close to the highway which makes me worry someone will stop to look and come back with a gun. I saw one guy pulled over the other day and slowed down to see what was up and he left before i turned back around. Poachers are everywhere and I will be back to check on those two soon and hopefully they will live until opening day...for some reason I am having doubts considering they have been visible from the highway though:frown:
