Probably a number of factors in the seemingly decline of the squirrel population. I have notice quite an increase in the number of squirrel hunters over the last two or three years. There is also a tremendous increase in the numbers of birds of prey. Owls and hawks are everywhere, along with a pretty fair eagle population. You add the bobcat, fox and coyote numbers to that, it is easy to see why the numbers might be down. As far as mast, I have been to several WMAs this year and the acorn crop seemed to be pretty good on most of them. I was at Wattensaw not long ago and acorns were everywhere but I did not see a single squirrel. Some years are boom and some are bust. Sometimes hard to pinpoint the problem.
