I have had 20 dollar ones all the way up to 175 dollar ones. None have lasted very long if fished hard. 2 or 3 years is about it. I try to find smooth ones with a good drag and replace with another 50 dollar one when they wear out. Right now most of mine are Pflugers or Diawa

Properly maintained I expect my 4 Stradic 4000's to be fishing long after I have gone. The "properly maintained" are the operative words here.

The 1 stradic I bought the body of the reel split in half reeling a fish in. It had never been hit or stepped on. It came cracked almost all the way through to the paint. I took it apart to see what happened and could tell it had been that way. It was my wife's reel and it was never used much. It was about 3 years old. Never bought another shimano spinning reel since. I had one of the cheaper ones and it got rough quickly and the drag was jerky.
I love shimano casting reels and look at them first.
