Description

When startled or captured, this snake curls up its upper lip on one or both sides. In the South, it is often found with the Smooth Earth Snake. Hides under lumber or debris around houses. Eats slugs, earthworms, insects.

description 8-16" (20.3-40.6 cm). A small snake; plain brown, gray, or black, with a single broad light stripe, or 4 faint narrow dark stripes, or all 5, down back. Belly red, orange, or yellow; occasionally jet black. 3 light spots on nape of neck, which sometimes fuse to form collar. Scales keeled, in 15 rows. Anal plate divided.
