N.E. Arkansas, a great place to live, WORST place for hunting and fishing.....

I am very thankful to live in Paragould and love our great state of Arkansas, but living in the area that I do, one has to travel to get into some good hunting and fishing; we have no major lakes and have to rely on private ground to hunt; we have descent wma's but nothing like the rest of the state offers; we have NO rifle season for deer and we get only 2 weekends for modern gun season plus the 3 day Christmas hunt; ABSOLUTELY NO turkeys and we have to travel (1 hr or more) to get into some descent fishing; no muzzleloader season as well;

With the price of gas, it's almost discouraging to think about traveling too much for fishing/hunting but have to in order to do what I love doing; all of you who live in different parts of the state where you get hunt with a rifle or have good lakes and rivers in your backyard, please don't take them for granted;

Thanks for letting me get rid of some steam.................rem

We have some great deer if you can find a place to hunt. Been some monsters found in Black River and Bayou DeView. Duck and goose hunting can be good. No big lakes, but we have some pretty decent river fishing nearby. It could be worse.

I have private ground in a month long gun season zone and gripe about not being able to grow a deer past two years old.
Yep, it could be a lot worse than we have it. I drive an hour to hunt in Sharp County, I could drive 4 to hunt Z12.

We have as good hunting on public land as anywhere. Big Lake (State side and Federal side) Scatter Creek, Bayou de View and Black River are just some of the places that have monster deer in them.

It's there, you just have to look a little to find it.
Heck got fishing areas all around us, but they are not spots you want to launch a big fancy bass boat and most do not have concrete boat ramps.
Man you be crazy!!! Some of the best fishing is here!!!! Plus huge deer!!! There no where in arkansas I would rather live than NEA. Shoot I thought no rifle season was a plus!!!
I hear ya remhunter it do suck around here, but the last thing we need is more gun season. We don't have many deer to begin with and the longer you allow folks to bang away at 'em the fewer we'll have.

Fishing pretty much sucks anywhere anyways!

Mossy are you talking about private or public? I'll admit the only 10lb bass I've caught has been from a lake up here but I can only think of a few 20lb sacks I've put together up here. I know some places to go catch good numbers if fish but 4s and 5s are pretty rare in those spots.
Remhunter, there are good places to fish, but there hard to find at times. I know were to catch catfish, but bass and crappie not so good at.
Just got to get out and do some looking lots good places to do both.
I do think the deer numbers are down hear in greene county maybe we need a bucks only gun season again.
I have found plenty of places to fish, But still make the 4.5 hr trip down south every year.
black river, Scatter creek, Bayou DeView, Sunken lands, Big lake... Need I saw more for the deer? Scatter Creek has some turkeys, st fransis has good fishing, as does Black river (all of it). Lake charles, Ashbaugh, Poinsette, Houge, current river... need I saw more for fishing?

I think you are just too tied down as far as what you think is good hunting.
I grew up in NEA, and I hunted/fished all of these areas, and still do. I still think its some of the best areas in the state. If you think otherwise, try duck hutning at Bayou Meto (over crowded), deer hunt at Wattensaw (over preasured), or fish at Lake Conway (boat on ever stump).

Public and private. We tear the bass up around here. You have rynolds, tou-lott, portia and shiery bay, lake charles, poinsett, and big slough and the river, then the bar ditchs and black river!!!!

I haven't been down south in a long time! I use to go down and fish the Arkansas river some and that was some fun diverse fishing. Nothing like that around here but still some good fishing. I've found the lake fishing to be lacking somewhat but the river fishing is excellent. As far as deer and turkeys go there are pockets of decent hunting but we don't have the size or quantity that we should have.

Scatter creek has produced a whopping 15 deer this year. Big lake has turned out 31 from the wma and nwr together. Bayou Deview has prodeced 16 all year. There have been 60 taken off the sunken lands and 100 taken from D. D. Exept for D.D. that's pretty low numbers if you ask me.

You catch big bass in all these spots? I have fished all of those but Reynolds but I guess I haven't been holding my mouth right. Which club do you fish out of? What would you say the average weight it takes to win a tournament up here?
Tournament?

So any of you guys up for a meet and greet/tournament? If so, where would you like to fish and when?
