I went to the hunters briefing the other day at LRAFB, and they are now enforcing a "doe before buck" rule. I think the rule is a good idea for the base, but it is gonna suck if I see a nice buck before I have killed a doe.:banghead: Anyone else on here hunt LRAFB?

I have hunted the base for the last 6 years and havent had a problem killing a doe. There are way more doe than bucks and they need thinned out, So I think its a great idea. I'm sure there will be less hunters because of the new rule, But that is ok with me too. Maybe I wont have to fight to get my stand this year. One other thing is that the base is getting 200 extra doe tags, so it looks like we will be able to take as many doe as we want.

I bet a lot of the hunters will be up along the airfield trying to cash on those gift certificates. I haven't hunted the base in 8 or 9 years, and I was quite surprised at the turnout for the briefing I attended.

I'm currently deployed, but I know the Wildlife guy on base, and they are wanting to reduce the herd from like 500 down to like 200 or so. Right before I left a few weeks ago, we had deer in the parking lot of bldg 120. Two years ago they brought in a Wildlife Biologist, and he saw my hunting magazine in the office and asked me a few questions. The next day, the commander said the biologist talked to someone and then requested another 100 doe tags for the base. That someone was me! :biggrin:I have never hunted the base, but a guy I work with killed a monster in 05 there.

Popham really doesn't care about QDM, he's more interested in the timber sales, and such. He comes off more as a tree hunger then anything else. I'm all for the "Earn A Buck" I actually suggested it last year along with a slot size limit. I guess an approval of 1 is better then none. Happy hunting I'll be checking my doe Wednesday afternoon. Come muzzleloader season I hope to be cashing in on those flight line does for the grift certificates!

Popham, is not the one I am talking about I believe. This guy is an actual wildlife biologist and works for the USDA, but is on base. Popham is the one that gives you the briefing correct, and I don't believe he is a wildlife biologist, just the Natural Resource Manager or some sort? We work with the wildlife biologist for the BASH study, and he's always coming to the office for frontal passage information. I know for sure they are two different guys.

Popham is the only one I've came across as far as biologists/eco guys. He is the one that gives the briefs also.

He sent out an email friday about the base doe tags he got for this year, he's got a 120 to give out so ya'll better go sign one out asap!
