I was guessing just the opposite. I have killed several like that and just assumed they were immature birds. It is not rare from what i have see. I was always waiting on a fully mature bird with the full bars across his chest which i never could seem to get them quite in gun range. Plus the mature birds were quite a bit larger and a lot wearier of the decoys.
not rare or age sign that i know of. mostly genics from what i read. sum gots lotta black others just have bars.. Nice bird. If i was ur boy id have it mounted.
That is a mature bird. Any bird that has bars aka: any black including almost all black,or very little black is a mature bird. The amount of black has nothing to do with age it has everything to do with genetics.
