Is 9mm + P worth it?

553 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Powerquack2K
I just got a Ruger LC9 for Christmas, and the gun is rated for + P BUT Ruger said a steady diet of + P would decrease the lifetime of the gun big time.

So if i shot + P through it, it would just be 20 - 30 rounds to make sure it fed and fired properly, then loaded to carry, never to target practice with, so I think the wear on the gun would be ok.

But my question is, does it give you that much of an advantage?

I truly don't know, any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Do a little research on this. I was dealing w/ the same issue in a 38 special +p and the info I found stated there was really no difference and that now the +p is more of a marketing tool.

Not sure a/b the 9mm though.
It adds velocity....... velocity=better terminal performance in a handgun....

9mm P+ will fall between standard 9mm and .357 mag/sig power levels..... and the .357 is a much better round in terms of stopping power vs. the 9mm.
With gold dot 124gr you gain about 70fps and about 50 ft/lbs of energy.
Thanks, so plus P 147 grains would push nearly as fast as normal 125 grains probably, so that would be decent amount better for stopping power I would think.

The 115's and 125 are most commonly used by law enforcement........ last time I did any reading the 125 +P was becoming the gold standard in 9mm terminal performance......

I was just doing some reading and findhing the same, thanks!
My feeling is that plus P rated ammo would give me an extra edge if push comes to shove....BUT my feelings don't prove one thing. From jello tests I've seen, there isn't all that much more penetration or expansion from most of the better bullet designs available today, whether standard or plus P
Get a 38 Super Auto and forget about it.
Since he already has the 9mm and is asking about ammo choice, the Super is probably out of the question.

And the proper response is 357 Sig anyway........
