Went to check my trapped tonight and found that one was missing. Huummm, I think it was the one with a short stake. So what's the standard length for a cat or coyote?

depends on the type of ground...most 1/2 rebar stakes are 18" or a bit longer...you can increase the holding power by cross-staking
disposable ground anchors may be a better choice if the ground is soft...
also 18" picket stakes hold well in soft wet ground if driven in completely...attach cable to the bottom half
