I’ve got a Rapala Ion lithium / rechargeable filet knife I leave in the boat. It does ok on bass, but today I tried it on some redfish (22-33 inches) and it sucked. It just did not have the power needed for reds. Is the Bubba lithium knife any better, or do you pretty much have to get a plug in model?
Any recommendations on a heavy duty knife that can handle tough fish?
Have used Rapala for years.. Didn't think their was anything better..
Until we filliet 120 Crappie and White Bass..
My Friend and co-worker pulled out a Bubba Cordless fillet knife..
I KNOW OWN ONE...WILL NEVR GO BACK...
YES THEY ARE THE DEAL!!!
I have the lithium ion Bubba Blade and have been very impressed. However, I have not used it on a red fish. They are a tough fish to clean - have always used the heavy duty model Rapala corded model for that.
I've had several different electric knives and they all crap out way earlier than they should. These days I buy an electric knife from the kitchen department for around $15 and use it until it craps out then I buy another. Kind of like a disposable lighter. They last as long as anything else I have tried.
I bought a cheap black and Decker about a month ago. Sometimes it works. Sometimes its a democrat. So I bought another one.
Grandson come in right at dark with 10 bass. I grabbed the new knife straight from the box and stuck it to the first fish. It lit me up! Couldn't let go of the trigger. Normally I use a 100ft extension cord but tonight I plugged into a little 6ft cord.
I've had Rapala cordless knifes for years and thought it was really good, until a friend of mine showed up with a Bubba cordless to help me clean some fish up in Minnesota. The Bubba beats the Rapala in everyway, especially on the bigger fish. When my current Rapala dies it will be replaced with a Bubba Knife.
I've got a cordless bubba, never be dragging out extension cord again. Came with 2 batteries, have to clean a bunch to ever run one down. But this is all been crappie, no big cats or anything.
Have any of y’all used both the corded and cordless versions to compare? Cordless would be nice, but I don’t necessarily need it. I wouldn’t want a loss of power on a bigger fish.
Yes... Cordless all the way....carry an extra charged Battery.....
Cleaned 173 Fish so far on the same battery...
Bass, Walleye, white Bass,Bream and 121 Crappie....
My wife got zapped once while helping fillet some fish about 20 years ago but I've never been zapped. In the old days I made sure my knife hand stayed dry and still do today but I also wear some disposable gloves from Harbor Freight. Started using them in the winter months so my hands would stay dry and warmer and decided what the heck. They keep the knife hand dry plus keeps the other hand slime free and makes clean up so much easier I wear them all year when I'm filleting now.
I tried the knife again today. Definitely something wrong with it.
I zip tied the trigger down and put a meter on the blades. 89 volts on the blades.
I like me some fresh fish but I want to wash it before I cook it.
My ex-father in law used to take a pair of angle cutters and cut the rib bones along the backbone on a large fish such as a red. Black Drum have even thicker rib bones. Once the ribs are cut through, the filleting is easy.
I saw the price for a bubba cordless electric today. They cost more than I ever expected.
