Gerald Sutherland at Pickles Gap gun works, by appointment only.
used him, like him.
known people to use Gander mtn, I never have though, heard good and bad things, but I can't speak from experience with them.

May have not been the guy mentioned above, but Mack's just messed up a barrel of mine today, albeit minor. He broke a bit off in the rib installing what was supposed to be a stainless steel bead. Instead of stopping there and asking me where to go from there, he took the liberty of installing it 1/4-inch back, which looks kind of goofy. I didn't have to pay, which was OK I guess.

Then when I got home I installed the barrel and shouldered the shotgun. I noticed that some of the threaded base was exposed, so I tried (gently) to tighten it myself. I was afraid he may not have drilled/tapped deep enough, so I turned it gently. It snapped off like plastic-- I have never seen steel snap like that when handled so gently. Have been told since that I should take it to Simmons for that work.

Not trying to stir up crap or discredit someone (and I am sure good stories will follow), but I think this was worth posting.

I am looking for someone with experience that can work on my Mauser. I am looking to restock the gun and properly bed the action. The gun needs to be re-blued aswell. I have a lot invested in this gun and want someone with experience that will take there time and do it well.

stay away from gander!!! i called ahead of time today to make sure a gun smith was in and was told yes they were till 4-5pm. so i drove up there arriving 30 min after this phone call took place and he had left for the day!

i called and talked to the manage when i got home and this guy had no idea about anything going in in his store. he said well he must have had an emergency. if i had an emergency and had to leave work my boss would be the first to know so when derrick tried feeding me a line i was a little upset and got hung up on..... so now i'll call and talk to their corporate

It is realy frustrating that to find a gunsmith the option of going to a "big box" store is even out there. Is there a smith out there that actually does more than change parts? I miss the days of a gunsmith having a stand alone shop, producing a quality product, and having customer service. I hate you had such a bad experience at Gander. What type of work are you needing done?

i was going to have a trigger job done on my sks and my scope mount tapped and installed.

my rem 700 spoiled me so i compare all my guns to shooting it. the sks just doesnt cut it so i figure why not, cause i plan on shooting it a LOT since ammo is cheap

what are you finding 7.62 X39 for $$$ ? Tapco use to sell SKS trigger groups that worked very well and may be an option for a better trigger or one to have a smith work with to get a better trigger pull.
