Well I went on my first duck hunt this past weekend. We went down to Alcorn to a friend’s pops place on Thursday and hunted Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here is the order of events…
Here I am on the right with my best BBDH pose, Murphy83 on the left.
Friday morning we had some birds on us but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and never put any down. Helped the land owner split wood most of the day then tried a evening hunt. No dice. We had some birds on us but very few. They were flying high and on a mission.
Saturday we hit it again and I smacked on woody. Then right before we left we had a group of specks come over and 2 got folded.
Saturday morning there was a nice buck that got hit in front of the farm. Rather than letting it go to waste pops called up some local folks that could use it and we passed it along to them. (yes all the proper steps were taken before you junior game wardens get fired up)
Saturday evening we moved spots to try and cut off a few geese (about 5000 snows and speck) that were hitting a field across from. They had been in this field Friday and Saturday morning and midday but when we went in Saturday evening they had jumped to another field and they didn't come over us.
We packed up and headed back to the farm. Fired up a nice bonfire and broke out the mason jar. Cooked our ribeye of the sky and that single woody and had a grand ole time.
We hit it again Sunday morning and I missed a few more. Packed up the dekes and stored the boat away. Had some breakfast and hit the road back to NWA.
All in all we had a great time with some good friends. Sitting in the blind shooting the bull and spending some shells. I read on here all the time about fighting duck hunters, sky busting, killing hens etc. I was dead set on never getting involved with duck hunting. After this trip I can see that those few that stir the poo are the minority and all the folks I met and hunted with were just like myself, self-respecting individuals that would give you the shirt off your back if you needed it. I will definitely be back.
Thanks to my buddy Dave and Lance (Murphy83) for making it a trip to remember and training this ole boy on what duck hunting is truly about. Comradery………
