Just really got into reloading this fall (hence my questions in other posts) but my 12 yo used a cartridge he reloaded to kill his first antlered deer this year.

It was a bang flop on a nice little spike(130 or so) at around 70 yards. Exit wound was about 1/2" with pieces of lung outside.

308 Winchester with 40 grain of Varget pushing a 150 grain Hornady interlock round nose. This a mid range load and is probably only doing 2200 out the Ruger Scout we used.

Need to tune it for accuracy we were getting 11/2" groups with it at the range.

Getting an animal with your own reload is a great feeling. Good for him. Be careful though. It only escalates from here. If your car tires get out of whack check to see if he has been pulling the wheel weights to melt down.

Bullet casting is next. He has killed four deer with my rifle and I haven't killed one w it yet. Haha

Tell him hunting with cast boolits doesn't work because they will bounce off!:fit:

Last year's tire weight buck for me. First and only cast boolit deer for me as well. I think I may have set the bar too high for my next deer.

I haven't shot a deer with a factory load in 15 years. Of course, that's mainly because .257 Weatherby is too expensive to shoot factory ammo out of...

I started in 1985. My NCOIC taught me how to reload for my 30.06. The last time I bought any factory loads for deer hunting was when a box of 30.06 was around $10 or so. Thank you MSgt Henderson. Now the casting part is fairly new for me. Been doing that for modern guns for about 3 years now. I did pour my own .50 round balls back in the 80's but that was pretty easy and not much to mess up.
