doe estrous?

Discussion in 'Bowhunting' started by carbonelement, Dec 18, 2010.

  1. Would using doe estrous work at this time of year? I usually only use it during the peak of the rut. I use a drag rag and lead them in when they are following the scent trail. Would it work this time of year or should a person just stick with doe urine? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Many doe have already hit the peak of their cycle but there are still lots of the younger ones who haven't. I have bow hunted for some 42 years now and have found that the late season rut can be even better then the early one. One reason is that there are fewer of the doe that will be in estrous so the bucks are looking hard. I went out scouting today on some Big Timber land and found some good worked scrapes, tells me that bucks are still on the prowl. I will use it myself, worked in the past and still works now. Give it a try and I think you will find it will be a good thing. Good luck.

Unless you're seeing a ton of bucks, its worth a shot. And judging by the fact that you're even asking this question I'd bet you're not seeing a ton of booners. Give it a try and let me know. I ain't exactly passing young up and comers right now myself.

  4. this has by far been my worst year EVER. I have only seen a handfull of deer all year. My game camera is full of night pictures. I hae some really nice bucks, well between 1:30am and 4:30am. I have not let an arrow fly. I have seen a couple deer during the day but none of which got close enough to my comfort zone. The one deer that did never gave me a good shot. I would rather wait for that good shot than wound a deer. I will try the estrous and see what happens.

Well carbon, it's been a tough year for me too. I've seen a ton of bucks but nothing I'd sling one at. Look at it this way... sometimes the late season is the best time to stick a biggun' Get the corn and rice bran out. These bucks are looking to gain back all they lost while chasing and the colder it gets the harder it is for them to find food. I'm gonna give 'em a couple more tries. Keep the faith. If it was easy, everybody would have a wall full of booners. Good luck.

  6. johnnie, trust me I will NOT give up. I will even be in the stand the last day if I have to be. I won't shoot a pregnant doe but if there is one not prego she is down for the count. I am not to worried eventually something has to happen. I love bow hunting and I agree with you. If it were easy it would not be as fun either. Hopefully all my work will pay off. Honestly I would be just as happy with a doe at this point as I would with a big ol horn porn buck. Good luck to you as well.
