I have a sister dying from CJD (google it), a 100% fatal disease very, very similar to Mad Cow & Chronic Wasting Disease. It's a million to one, but that didn't matter for Becky.

She has gone from talking to being completely comatose in about 10 days.

There's no telling where she got it, but she traveled all over the world working in the military supply chain back in the 80s & 90s when Mad Cow was first being discussed, including places with Mad Cow problems.

I know places I hunt (Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, etc) are confirmed CWD states.

Even on Arkansas deer I always wear gloves when gutting & handling carcases, but now I'm spooked about even bringing back meat from CWD states.

Do you guys treat them any differently than local deer....above & beyond AGFC CWD requirements...?

Thanks.

it was such a huge scare back in the 1990's early 2000's that WI tried to eradicate an entire quadrant of the state

of course, prions don't go away, they exist naturally in the world, always have

call it whatever you want to - encephalopathy of any kind are very similar

me? I hunt NW Kansas - one of the hot spots (or near to it) for CWD

I don't treat the deer there any different than I do here and IMO CWD is nationwide, confirmed cases or not

You are correct on the prions, Stealth.

The spread of the malformed ones that cause the disease is on the rise from what I read, because of animal containment and feed practices i the 80s & 90s.

There are no symptoms for 10-15 years or longer, then it progresses rapidly.

I started wearing gloves when I cleaned anything several years back. I am now doubly careful, especially with anything to do with the brain & spinal chord.

Becky's first symptoms were over the Thanksgiving weekend & she died on January 18.

always wear rubber gloves even shoulder length is better. they are cheap and there is simply no reason not to have some in your pack. my hands are alway scratched or cut and thats a perfect gateway for bad things
