Crappie tournament?

Okay guys here's the deal. We have a cabin rented on Poverty Point Lake this weekend. The crappie are suppose to be spawning, moon is right, weather is suppose to be perfect.

A friend of mine called me this morning and said they were having a crappie tournament there this weekend open to the public. I'm thinking about entering the tournament.

My question is what is a fishing tournament about? I know nothing about fishing in a tournament. Can anybody tell me?

Everyone will put money in and whoever catchs the biggest sack takes the money.:thumb:
The most fish or the biggest fish? Or both?
depends, usually there is a big fish pot and a prize schedule for big stringers. I always had to put in for whatever somebody else won. Then I found a bunch of people who couldn't fish and liked riding in boats and started winning some prizes.

I like fishing over at thompson pond. Biggest grinnell I ever caught was over there.:stooges: It was about 30" long and I caught it on 4 lb line. Thought I was gonna get my picture on the big board in the snack shop.

It's about a lotta good fun, some great comraderie...and a celebration afterwards where somebody gets to be a celebrity and win prizes:biggrin: Go for it!!
My kind of tournament you weigh the empty beer cans and fish together to determine the winner. Other wise known as a redneck fishing derby

When's the next one, Many? I may not weigh the most cans, but I will certainly derive my quota of amusement:thumb:

You've got some good answers here.
My honest opinion is that tournements turn good past-times into games to be "won", and are promoted to make money for the manufactureres....
'just my $0.02 worth....

Bett,

I have had luck at Thompson Pond on shiners and Black Jigs with Chartreuse or Green Tails. Caught some nice ones around the marina and over by the graveyard. Lots of timber jut north of the marina looks like there ought to be a lot of fish in it. I just never got much chance to try it. My FIL caught a real nice one off the tree over by the fishing dock kind of NW of the Marina.

Just a warning, That place is about the snakiest water I ever saw. Needs a few Gators in it to clean em out.

Good Luck.

The black jigs with the green tails is what we caught them on. The wind was horrible Friday and Saturday but it layed down Sunday morning and we had a ball pulling a few in before we had to load up and go.
Here's a few I caught.

My sister was fishing for bream. Had a cricket on a bream hook and she caught this catfish.

It is always windy through that stretch of the country. Did you all stay in one of those cabins that are on stilts over the water. They were still under construction when I was by there the last time. I never caught Channel Cats out there but caught a lot of bullheads. I gave them to whoever around me wanted to take them home.

My bro in law was using a 1/2 a dead minnow and a little Scooby-Do Zebco pole catching goggle-eyes and chinquapins off the dock by the cabins and something grabbed his bait and took off for the other end of the lake. Never did see what it was.
Yes we stayed on the cabins that were on the water. They were great. Had a screened in porch on one side. Open porch on the other three sides. Big kitchen with plenty of room for everybody. The people in the cabin next door caught an 8 pound bass of the pier! We were all yelling and cheering him on. It was so much fun. I'll post some more pictures of the cabins.
Another sister. She was standing behind the cabin on the porch.

The beer crew!!! Coming in through the screened porch. The guys sat out there and played dominoes when it was to windy to fish.

Mama even brought Daddy for the day on Saturday. He had a ball. He saw this Mardi Gras cap and HAD TO WEAR IT! :smack:

I had to hurry and close that picture of your daughter before my wife saw it. Otherwise we'd probably have to make a shopping trip so that she could buy her one of those zebra striped purses. :smack:
