The reasoning behind this is the same reasoning as the elites that think only 140 inch class bucks should be killed. No one should be able to kill any buck they want to feed their family. Now we have these catfish tournament elites wanting to limit what country Joe can catch in his nets/trotlines to feed his family. As has already been stated the river is so large with so many fish you could never put a dent in the population. That river continues to produce new world/state records every few yrs, so keeping all those big blues isn't hurting anything.

I figured all the rubber’s, dead bodies, chemicals and sewage would harm the population more so than any commercial fishermen.
Exactly this.
There is a river in Oregon that flows into the mighty Columbia river that has raw sewage from the big city that is dumped directly into it. People catch sturgeon, which are bottom feeders and eat them. That’s just a nasty thought. We call the fish on the Willamette river brown trout. Gawd only knows how many bodies and meth lab crap is in there too.

lol, nope, red states like big government too, just from a different point of view.

Wait a minute, I thought Red states were all for small gubmint and making proper choices???
Sounds like the same crap the Marxist gubmint (Blue Dogs) up here are doing, WDFW curtailing opportunities for stakeholders (subjects to the crown) by closing rivers, lakes due to mismanagement.

Hopefully those guys that can make the meeting will show up but no one is on the agenda to speak.
is it a bad thing to turn loose all the > 34" catfish ?

I ran hoop nets with a guy one summer, we caught 100's of 2-3# catfish ... that's a pretty good operation without keeping anything bigger than 34"
it could be a bad thing when they decide which river is next. And it is always a bad thing for those guys that have to release a catch. They aren’t fishing for fun.

how many commercial fisherman in Arkansas ?

I'll tell you this as far as resources/fishing ... my uncle lives on the Missouri river, St Charles. They banned commercial fishing on it years ago - and now? Its one of the finest catfishing places I've ever seen. With 30 poles in the springtime and big bream you can catch hundreds of pounds of fillets in a few nights

Before, when it was commercially fished, it wasn't anything like that

I understand using resources - but if making the river a better fishery for all means turning back 34" catfish ?

I don't think that's unreasonable at all

I was able to listen to part of the live meeting today, on the line, and there were two commercial cat-fishermen who addressed the commission. They did a great job presenting their case (off the cuff) that the proposed reg was just not needed. IMHO they changed the flow of the tide. The commission agreed to postpone the decision for a time until they have heard more from the public on this proposed regulation concerning catfish on the Mississippi River. I have to say that the commissioners showed great respect to the commercial fisherman and really engaged the men with several thoughtful questions. I think that the recorded meeting will be available to the public and you can hear it for yourself.

So, if you have a dog in the fight, I would start sending emails to anyone you know on the commission or in the Fisheries Division. Here are some public emails I found on the line.
I would make those emails thoughtful and professional. You might even get a response.

Arkansas is just as blessed as green timber hunting with catfishing. There’s no need to handcuff those folks working the river to catch catfish. There’s probably only a small handful that make a living catching fish. There have been river rat commercial guys on the river forever in Arkansas and we still have way more fish even trophy class catfish than could ever be affected by these guys or it would have already happened. The scary part if this passes is which river would be next.

The AGFC is having a powwow tomorrow at 1 PM at the main campus auditorium. You could show up there and give them a piece of your mind.

I’m not likely to show up sadly I have other obligations.Hopefully some more of the commercial guys will be there.I have commercial license but not to make a living with.Just hate to see that rule enacted as I do believe there’s absolutely no need for it.Thera are oodles of 30 lb plus catfish in our rivers.

As earlier mentioned, big brown trout are required to be released. Catfish over 34” aren’t good to eat anyway. You’ll be allowed to keep one trophy. Sounds like it would make AR refs same as MS &TN, which would simplify things. Don’t see what all the fuss is about.
