It was a good night. I got my first cat. I also got my first two catches in a dogproof.
I had a cat, 2 coons, a possum, and a dog.

Set two today for some urban coyotes. Figure I'll have possums tonight but maybe once they are gone I can get the yotes. Been seeing a pair of them and hearing them every few nights. Pretty sure they raised a litter just beside the house.

Still running 6 dirt hole sets. Tough to keep them all clean with the nasty weather last night caught a yote and a fox 2 of the other traps had been stepped around (looked like fox). I’ve got a dozen more MB-550 with earth anchors on the way. Having too much fun and hopefully helping the other wildlife a little

I think that brings our dirt hole set total to 4 yotes, 3 fox, 2 bobcat. We’ve got some DP’s just haven’t set them in a while. Will probably set some of those this week after tomorrows big rain.

Got up late but threw 8 dirt holes a snare and a couple dog proofs out this morning. Gonna try to stop and set a few more on the way to work. These mountains don’t seem to produce like the cattle farms around here but after a couple years of trapping the forest service roads behind the house I seen the first turkey track I’ve seen in 4 years up there Sunday when I caught that yote.

Getting back on the line.
I guess it’s working. When I started on this part of the farm a couple years ago it was common to get 2-4 a night, coons, grinners, an occasional skunk.

Last night, just this little guy.

Had these caught Tuesday morning. Had to have surgery. So not doing much. Both on public land. Not very far from the road. I had few Duke 1 3/4 traps. Wife picked them up at a yard sale cheap. Should had another cat this morning. I used a few small stepping rocks down for guides. Somehow one ended up between the jaws. Along with bobcat hair. As soon as i get well. I will hammer the coyotes again.

Not a big fan of the 1 3/4 traps. Never usally go smaller than a #2 on cats.

But both cats was caught very well in them. The traps started out as regular jaws. I welded a bead inside the jaws to get a small offset.

Gotta love trapping public land. Had an anchor cut this morning and trap hanging from a tree with a ribbon tied to it. Whoever done it stole my id tag off of my chain. Don’t understand why people can’t leave other people’s stuff alone.

Might have caught their dog.
Might have caught their dog.
Might have and I honestly hate it if I did but still don’t give them the right to cut my anchor. Ain’t that hard to let a dog out though. I understand it could happen on public land but I’d rather come back to my trap set off from where the dog was released then my cable cut.

We had a good first few days, including one night yielding a coyote and a grey fox in traps within 20 yards of each other, and a bobcat in another. Added some traps, then went 4 nights with nothing. Day before yesterday we caught the male bobcat in same trap we had previously caught a female, plus the male and female coyotes in traps about 40 yards apart. Just added the dog proofs and caught the coon on 3rd night, using cinnamon chex cereal and grape licorice. My friend and I are alternating mornings of checking the traps, which works out well with our work schedules. We are pulling and moving a few, then adding some more in the morning. Enjoying the aspect of trying different sets and scents.

In a conversation today, I compared trapping to baseball. You fail more than you succeed. At least that’s the case for me.
