Thinking about buying a case of these in 20 gauge 3” with # 5 shot. My question is has anybody used these duck hunting and what are your thoughts on them? Thanks

Yes, for years. My son shoots the 2 3/4" 5s. If you are hunting fields, I'd go with the 3 ' 3/5 blend though. A bit more range.

Bismuth isn't as heavy as lead, so recommendation is to shoot one shot size lower than you would. So lead 6 roughly equals bismuth 5.

I shoot them on occasion. I bought them to shoot in my older model A5's and a Remington 1100 20 gauge magnum that will not eject any kind of steel load. Ejects Boss and lead just fine. I've had no issues with them. For the past 2 or 3 years, all we are killing in the fields are spoonies and teal so I just keep shooting the cheapest steel I can find.

I have been shooting them. I like how they pattern. I am shooting 3" #4 at ducks. Actually killed a couple geese with them just because that is all I had at the time but would recommend larger shot size for geese. I have had less clean up shots also. I am not saying they made me any better of a shot by any means just seems to have a more dense pattern which resulted in less cripples.

I have SX4 12 I hunt with. Also have Belgium 20 mag with mod Japan barrel and new Stoeger 20 mag. Wanting to give 20’s a go and trying to not be so handicapped with them.

My kids both shot them this year and I took their gun a couple of days and they shot very well. I shot a 20 for years before switching back to the 12 and they’re the best 20 ga. load I’ve ever shot including Hevi X. That being said my kids are getting bigger and now that everyone is jumping on the 20 ga. train, we’re jumping off and I’m buying them both 12’s because ammo is easier to get and cheaper.

I’ve hunted BOSS #5 in 12ga and 20ga. Haven’t noticed a bit of difference. Both shells kill. 12ga 2 3/4” has 1 1/4oz vs. 20ga 3” has 1 /8oz. I haven’t seen that 1/8oz make a difference.

The 20ga is a lot nicer to carry and shoot. I used it with BOSS #3 on specks. Killed them, no problem. No cripples.

As little as I get to hunt nowadays (compared to many years gone by), I’ll shoot the better stuff. Y’all can have the steel.

I've shot BOSS 3's and 4:s out of my Browning Superposed...it's an older, fixed choke gun (mod/full, 3" mag 12-gauge). I thought they were very usable - if I do my part, the shells do theirs just fine. The issue I had one day was just not shooting well, which is an expensive proposition with BOSS. I know some people have had issues with bismuth shattering inside the birds and leaving pellet pieces all throughout the meat, but I haven't done any autopsies to figure out if I'm getting anything like that.

I used to handload ITX for another couple of old shotguns I have, but they quit making ITX, so now it's buy BOSS, handload bismuth, or only shoot the guns with lead on clay pigeons or doves.

I have yet to use Boss ammo but have shot Hevi-Shot Bismuth #4 on ducks from a older fixed full Ithaca 37 16ga. It works very well and I plan to try the Boss #5s next season if we have a duck or two fly through SW Ar. in the daylight hours. I have read/heard good reports on Boss products and am willing to pony up the extra cost of bismuth to enjoy carrying my older guns into the field.

Bought some to shoot in old a5 12s and liked them a lot so I ordered skme 20s in the 5s and 7s. The 7s are awesome in the woods. Obviously they cost significantly more but no more than I shoot these days it’s negligible over the course of a season. I will be ordering more for next season for my 20.

I think it’s the indian, not the arrow.
I have shot a few cases of BOSS over past couple seasons, as well as “regular steel,” and I just haven’t been able to see much difference.
(I think they figured out how to market direct to consumer stuff really well, like Divebomb, Sitka, Yeti, etc, and that’s got more to do with the reason your neighbor/brother-in-law/anyone Else who shoots boss really likes to talk a lot about boss).
I could be wrong, just one man’s opinion.

I have shot them for several yrs now. There is no comparison between boss and steel shot. I shoot 5’s primarily and occasional 7’s in the woods. I shot 7’s out of a .410 this yr in the timber. I killed ducks out to 40 yds with it. No reason to shoot anything more than a 5 in the timber. I’ve not shot the 3x5 loads but after shooting the 5’s I really don’t see the need even in the fields.
