Well today was about one for the memory board! I convinced my wife and youngest boy to go out with me to check my trail cams. I had skipped hunting this morning because I was sick with stomach issues last night. So we head out around 10:30 or so. She said "Why are you taking your gun?" I replied " I NEVER go into the woods during deer season without my rifle!" We stopped and pick up one cam and were moved it to a new location. We were driving back to the cabin and we started across the pipeline right of way and I look down it and saw a HERD of deer. I counted 4 in one bunch(200 yards) and could see another 6 just past them on the next ridge(250 yards out). I jumped out of the truck with my gun and stood on the running board and laid across the roof and drew down on the biggest doe who was closest. She bolted just as I was starting to squeeze the trigger. I moved over on another doe and the same thing happened. Then moved to another and they all then left. I was disappointed but told my wife better to not shoot if you are taking a rushed shot. I turned on the pipeline and went away from the where we had seen the deer to go show my wife a real pretty view off the mountain top. We looked and turned back towards where we had seen the deer. When we got where we had stopped I look down there and the group of 6 was back where the group of 4 had been and I jumped out again and repeated my earlier actions. I settled in on a larger doe and cracked one off and down she went! My wife and boy went to cheering! The other deer just stood there. I said you want me to take a second one? My wife yells "YES!" I settled in on a second one and cracked one off and she bolted just as I pulled the trigger and I missed. But we had one down! My wife said this IS AWESOME! She has never been with me when I killed one. We loaded the doe up and took her to the cooler. We gutted weighed and hung her up. I told my wife that we still had to go check on one of my cameras. So we jumped on the 4 wheeler and went to get the card. We got there and I was putting the new card in and heard something running looked up and a here comes a doe! She ran up and stopped at about 20yards. I said " I can not believe this!" My wife said "she is to small don't shoot her" so I pulled up and the doe ran off. My wife now wants to go with me next year!
We got home around 12:30 and my wife said are you going back ? I said "no, I have enough work ahead processing that doe" She insisted that I go back and try to get another one. She said "they are obviously moving so go back it is the last day!" Well I loaded my youngest boy up and we went to one of our "huts" My youngest ,Ben is a deer hunting nut! This kid wears camo every time he is allowed to get away with it and he talks about deer and deer hunting constantly. He has never been with me when I killed a deer until earlier today when I shot the doe. He was stoked. We got to the hut around 3:15 and settled in. He was playing his Nintendo and then said he was gonna take a nap. He was jumping around making all kinds of noise and I had to remind him that we could go home if he wanted to play. He settled down and fell asleep. Well at 4 o'clock I heard deer running up the draw behind us. I had not opened the rear window shutter so I could not see that way. I looked out the left side and saw a doe and then a buck and then another doe! They were about 20 ft from the hut! I stuck the gun out the left window and the buck took the lead and started up the trail that would put him less than 15ft from us. He stopped and looked right at me on full alert! I said well crap he is gonna bolt. I picked out a gap in the bushes and looked over at Ben and he was sound asleep….no time to wake or make any noise. I touched it off and the buck jumped up and fell over backwards and then ran with his chest down and plowing through the woods and piled up at about 30yards. I leaned out the window and could see him. He raised his head and looked at me so I shot him in the spine. Nailed that coffin shut! Ben said What Are you shooting? I said A BUCK! We bailed out of the hut and ran over to the deer. We started high fiving and celebrating.
This is not my biggest buck or even close to the biggest on the place. BUT it was the last day and the memory made with my son that will last forever. He is so excited wants to go back everytime I go now. ( or so he says LOL) Memories made in the woods mean more than the size of the rack! Good hunting to all!
