Really wanting to get into coyote hunting, but not sure if I have the right gun for it. I've got a .17HMR and a .243. I've been told that I really need a .223. Opinions?

If you are not worried about fur the 243 is hands down the best coyote gun out there. I use a few different guns when hunting for fun. When I hunt a contest where money is on the table I always carry the 243.

Of your 2 choices, go with the 243.

If you are looking for an excuse to buy another gun, We will stand behind your decision to buy any caliber that you want.

Why does the 25-06 not get a lot of mention on these threads?

The way I read it he has a 17 HMR and 243 and was wanting to know the best of the 2.

If I wanted what I feel is the absolute best coyote gun I'd go with a 25/06. Far better ballistics than the 243.

Whatever is in your hands when you see one....22-250 has my vote! Out of the two you mentioned the 243. I have put them on the ground before with a 17hmr...only to get out of the tractor and watch them run off after I knock them down. If you double tap them with the 17 it works well...never had one get away with 2 shots in them. You better hope it is not much over 100yds and low wind with the 17. The 243 will work the hides over if you are worred about that.

I don't have a .17 or 243, but do have a 22-250 and a couple of 223s. Both work well for coyotes. I did undershoot a javelina last weekend twice with my AR in 223. First time was 278 yards then again just over 300 yards.Aimed at top of back both times. Gun is sighted in 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. My 22-250 sighted in the same would have smoked him, but the 223 isn't nearly as flat shooting. 223 is a great coyote round, but if shooting past 250 yards regularly a 204, 22-250, or 220 swift would be better. 243 with light bullets looks awful good on paper as well.

Btec why is the 243 better than the 22-250 or 25-06? Not arguing, just wondering.

HFH. I love the 250 and have killed a crap load of coyotes with one. Aint nothing wrong with em. However they dont have the speed of 243 with the lighter bullets. I push a 55g bullet at 4000 fps with my 243. That is not possible with a 250.

I like the 25/06 as well. They have never really took off in the predator world. The lightest bullet I know of is a 75 grain which would work fine but wouldnt be fur friendly. I guess the lack of light weight varmint bullets would be the biggest negative. The heavier recoil for no real reason is not attractive to me. Im certainly not saying it is not a fine coyote caliber.

The 243 on the other hand can shoot the 55g which is about perfect for coyotes IMO. Or you can go up to the 87g Vmax or even up to just over 100g if need be. They are just very hard to beat for coyotes.

After saying all that Im shooting a 17 caliber for everyday calling. I got my 250 out today and shot it. Too much recoil and too dang loud after being spoiled by the just as effective 17. At the end of the day its just personal preference.

Hornady says the superforme push a 50 gr v max 4000 fps. I have a 22-250 is my calling gun. Listen to Mr C got a AR love it. My 25/06 love it to shooting a 85 gr bt. I think u can get a 60 gr hp for a 25 cal I seen somewhere. I have a 243 I shoot a 70 gr bt. If it is windy I carry 25/06. I have been carrying the ar for the first yote kill. I like hunting with all of them.

Like was said above, they will all kill a coyote in the end. It all boils down to personal preference, what you have in the safe or what you have a desire to buy.
