2008-2009 deer season proposal

I called Little Rock AGFC the other day to inquire about our upcoming season proposals. I was only asking about zone 7.

The two things that I wanted to know about were these:

1. Are we still going to close the rifle season for the three days before Thanksgiving?

The reason that I asked that, was the simple fact that most all of the youth, including college students are out of school that week. This would seem like a great time to have those 3 days back so that the target group that we are need to be recruiting could be out in the deer woods.

I was shocked to learn that it is being proposed to open our season on Nov. 8th. and close it back down on the 16th. It would re-open on the 27th.

I was not given a biological reason for this. I think that I know the real answer after attending some of these deer management workshops.

They have taken the gun season out of the rut!

2. My next question was about us having a three day doe hunt, like they have been trying in zones 1 & 10. I was told that there was not enough data to support that at this time. They are going to raise the doe quota from 620 to 820.

You hunters might want to inquire about the proposals in your zones.

I'm pretty upset at this point. That's putting it extremely mild!

It's just amazing that they would close the season at the time when lots of people will be off and would be able to enjoy the season.

That's a time when young people are out of school and could spend time hunting.

I think it's time for an Amendment 75 recall!! I wish this tax had to be voted on every 2 years. Then the AGFC would be more responsive to hunters needs.
Ain't that the truth.

Maybe we could revote the appropreations of it???

I've been thinking the same thing!
Pat, there is a week in between the first week of gun season and the week of Thanksgivingso it will actually be closed for 10 days before in opens back up on Thanksgiving

just a little FYI:thumb:

I'm well aware of that. Please have someone give us a biological reason behind this move.
What move???? Season opens on its normal date (second weekend of the month) Thanksgiving is two weeks later.Unless you want the season to close two weeks earlier I'd say your asking a little too much. But then I'm asking why make me only take two does with archery equitment in zone 10 and give you gun/muzzleloader guys 11 days to take a doe and have no quota on does.If its that far out let me take three does?
The rut gig just blows my mind cause its differant every single year it never ever hits during that time all over the state it may be here but not there its just not that way.
Read the season dates and limits for zone 7 for the past few years and then get back with me.

This has nothing to do with zone 10!

OK...I will.

Biologically speaking, when you have gun hunters in the woods...they scare a lot of good bucks and make it harder for me to stick a goodern with my string and stick.

It just makes them "biologically" really smart...and at a time that the "rut" should make them really dumber, and I can enjoy my bow time in the woods much better if all those "gun" hunters are at home.

Biologically, the G&F can move seasons so I can enjoy my hunt, cause that is what about twenty or thirty (?????) ask for in some dumb meetings, where the G&F folks can say later that it was "what the hunters ask for and really wanted".

I am just glad that the G&F did not "stop ALL hunting", "stop all hunting in November" or some other rule that would take my archery hunting days away....like some at the meetings wanted...

As old (AGFC) Huntin4BB said...I may have to..( stay on archerytalk.net where the real hunters are anyway.)

Damn gun hunters anyhow...

Here's my take. First we had 20 days in 2007, and we got 20 days 2008 but with a whole week split.

With the way the days fell this year with Thanksgiven being on the 27th and not like it was this last year on the 22nd. So we miss a whole week of the rut with a gun. My solution is to bring the week thats in Dec back in Nov like we use to have it, and leave the three day break before Thanksgiven if they have too for what ever reason they have, and close it on Sunday weekend after thanksgiven,

Doing it like I stated would put our traditional gun hunt back in the rut. It would still give us 4 weekends also. Same as it has been for a while.

Seems pretty simple to me.

I got a great Idea...

Lets just make EVERYONE hunt the EXACT same days and you choose what method to use. Sounds fair to me...

Or maybe we need to close the season (for all hunters) during the rut. Sounds fair to me...
BTW, I've been a bow hunter all my life. :verymad:
In my humble opinion there is no biological reason, because this is a pure political special interest regulation based on the wishes of elitist bow hunters that want the deer buck harvest reduced to provide what is perceived to be more and larger bucks available for the archery hunters. The next step will be to stop small game hunting because it interferes with the special interest of the same group of people.

This is the exact same issue, I had to deal with as a District Ranger in Alabama where organized special interest archery hunters tried to get 196,000 acres of public land set aside for archery deer hunting only and it was an inside job with employees of the Game and Fish Division supporting it. :thumb:

Now I remember why I didn't go to the meetings. Take the opinions of a few guys (bowhunters) that think they know more than the biologists and let them set the seasons.
77% of the deer hunters in Arkansas use the rifle as their primary weapon.
I am a BOWHUNTER and I fully resent these remarks I hunt every available day I can wheither its gun, muzzleload or bow season I could care less if your season overlaps my prefered method but politics does play a better part than what you or I care to admit too.
And the zone 10 issue is just as important to me as this is with you in zone 7
You SHOULD be concerned with ALL seasons, not just your season in YOUR zone. This is the problem with hunters, just like gun owners, "If it doesn't bother me and my seasons, to heck with the rest of you".

that's one reason why I hunt with every method so I can say that each season does matter to me where most are just concerned with gun ,bow or muzzleloader.

Nuff said...
