Gonna float the Ouachita up around Oden tomorrow. I have heard there are smallmouth in pretty good numbers there. I was thinking small spinnerbaits, maybe Rebel crawdad crankbait. Any other baits that I should take? Never fished for them before.
Browning Gold I may see you on the water tomorrow. I'll be in a red old town Vapor and the girlfriend will be in OD green kayak. If you see us say hello!
We are gonna rent from Riverview. Not sure if their trips are shuttle up and float down or what. Just gonna be passing thru on the way to see some family in Waldron and thought it'd be a fun trip. If you see me holler! I'll be the good looking guy with a beard!
We will be staying in the camper trailer at Ouachita Haven. We aren't sure what they do on floating either so we shall see. I really like the Ned Rig in any watermelon or pumpkin. I like a pro model spot remover in 1/8 oz with a small creature bait like a baby brush hog, speedcraw, or a ZCraw. Small pop-r, and small stick bait like a spook early in the mornings.
I used to wade down river from the old low water bridge (my wife was baptized there) are let the current take tubes and crawdads up under trees stuck in the shoals and bends. Really under anything where the water was fast.
Bitsy Tubes in the color above or in Watermelon Craw color. I've caught literally hundreds of small mouths on them. Rig with a 1/8 or 1/4 oz (depending on depth and current, but lighter is better) inserted tube head.
Small white flukes work well too.
The Rebel craws work and will catch a lot of fish, but you'll also catch every pumpkinseed and perch in the water. those little trebles make that a real pain to deal with.
Well fellas, the trip didn't go quite as planned. Left the Oden bridge and dumped the canoe at the first right hand turn 300yds downstream. Lost a spinning rig, a flip flop and the wife's swimsuit cover up. Picked up life jackets and tackle box, Ziploc bags with chips and cookies for a half mile downstream. Got back going and fished some but never really got in the groove. Came upon a guy with the back hook of a Pop-R buried up in his thumb right beside the nail, and his Leatherman wedged onto the snap ring, unable to release it. His wife got him to shallow water where I could help. I got the pliers off and unscrewed the hook from the back of the bait. Told him due to the location and angle the fishing line trick wouldn't work. The only option was to jerk it out. He said he tried but it hurt too bad and he couldn't do it. I wish ya'll could have seen the look in his eyes when I told him I wouldn't feel a thing! He said go ahead and I counted to three and yanked it out. He let out a few then apologized to the ladies. He thanked me and we went on our way. We made it to the takeout spot without any further troubles.
Monday we decided to give kayaks a try. Hit Lucky's at Glenwood and floated down to Bakers Rock. Nice little trip but didn't fish any. Really enjoyed the Kayak over the canoe. It was a first for both of us. I just ordered her one for our Anniversary in a few weeks. After I see how hers handles my large carcass, I will figure out what I want to get. Naturally I prefer the Triton TR18 with a 150 Evinrude, but whatever gets my lady in the outdoors with me I'll do.

The one in the pic wasn’t hard , didn’t take much effort.
I held the eye down (did take a couple of deep breathes though) and friend snatched it out.
Never felt it and I fished all day. Now it did throb all day but the next day it wasn’t even sore
This cat grimaced every time I touched it. I don't think he coulda stood me rolling it over enough to hold it down....
sricen, I just went with an entry level. Found some on sale at a really good price. Got the Lifetime Tahoma 10' Sit on top. Was gonna go with the SunDolphin Bali10SS, but read some negative reviews and the shipping was a month out.
I was teaching a guy how to fly fish on the Little Red many years ago. That joker stuck a fly in his upper lip right under his nose! It looked like a little Hitler mustache. Ha! It was not pretty, but I got it out with a pair of wire stripper pliers and a set of forceps. I don't think I had ever laughed that hard or that hard since.
I would laugh and he would start laughing. I mean to tears! I would say, "OK, OK, let's get serious and get this hook out". We would compose ourselves and as soon as I went to work, we would start laughing again. I would grab the end of that hook and start pulling. His ol lip would start quivering like a dog crapping a peach pit. I am just laughing remembering it. That Itty bitty hook finally came out with a loud pop. We cleaned up his lip and went back to fishin'!
No.No.No.
Funny thing is...I have no problem dealing with and seeing the most graphic animal injury pictures...I just go into the mode of "How can I fix this"...but people injuries just creep me the heck out!
Prob my worst one. KVD 1.5 with a 3lber hanging off it goes deep. All I had was a rusty pair of pliers that wouldn't close all the way. Finally just bared down on it til it popped out. Went back to fishing!
Human skin is crazy tough. Pushing a hook through doesn't seem like it would be hard to do, but it is quite difficult if the hooks aren't really sharp.
