I just got home from playing a little basketball tonight. That's about the only exercise I've been able to get lately.
But I was wearing my Asics basketball shoes.

I go to D1 in Little Rock and we do everything from lifting to bear crawls etc. On the weekends I try and run a mile or three if we go out to eat (I love to eat). I have tried every shoe you can imagine from the real expensive ones to the cheapos. If I was you I would start out by going to a New Balance store (one on HWY 10 in L.R.) and let them "fit" you for a pair. They know what they are doing and they ended my search for the perfect shoe.

Here is the link to D1 if you are looking for a good gym.

My mom went to the N/B store and was very pleased.

I wanted to tell everybody thanks for their input on this subject. I have been getting back into walking/jogging. I went today and tried on some Asics running shoes, felt good and gonna hit the treadmill in the morning with them!
Thanks
Chris

Bought me a pair of Asics Gel Frantic shoes today.
Only time will tell if I actually use them for running though!

Here is where I order my asics. They have good prices, and free shipping. I get this cross trainer model because I don't do alot of running. Last year, Consumer Report ranked this shoe #1.

I think I'll stick with Academy Sports, I paid $60 for shoes that were $85 on there.

I found the opposite to be true for that model. Plus I saved on sales tax by ordering online.

my advice would be to go to new balance or easy runner and find out what "kind" of shoe your foot needs. all the brands make different "kinds" of shoes, for stability, performace, custioning, and structure. your body type and roll(supinate) of your foot will determine largely what type of shoes to get, then just try a brand, i like asics, but tried a pair of brooks and like them too. not getting the right type of shoe can lead to injury and you are back to square one. it only takes a minute for them to watch you run to put you in the right kind of shoe, and well worth it, especially if you get the wrong shoe, get injured and are out for a month nursing it. just my 2 cents.
personally i like asics and brooks.

tdf,
I've had a pair of Brooks before and they were probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I ever owned. They just didn't last very long for me. Of course I was playing basketball a good with them. I don't think the sole of the should could handle all the quick starts and stops that were demanded in basketball.

I average 20 - 25 miles per week and have run in New Balance, Asics, Brooks, Saucony, Nike and Addidas. I currently have two pair of Nike that I alternate. I have had no problems out of them. I cant remember the specific model but one pair is black and white with red trim and the other is two shades of grey with bright lime trim. They are durable enough for my long runs and also light enough for my speedwork. The rest in order are Brooks, Asics, Addidas, Saucony and then New Balance. I have just never found a pair of New Balance that fit my feet well. I have had a lot of surgeries on my left knee and my stride has been affected and the NB are just uncomfortable.

Does your running consist of ground running? or treadmill running? just curious.

Yeah last year when we had a pretty good windstorm blow in, I was running in that crap, sure was difficult.

I've seen a few pairs of Brooks at Academy. Are there any other places around LR that carry them?

Be sure

That you know if you pronate of have a nuetral foot - If you have a nuetral foot strike and you run in a support shoe your feet will kill you - I like asics nimbus - I have Under Armour now they are okay but nowhere near Asics in shoe science - I have ran since the 90's used to run a lot now run a little - but still enjoy it - I like running gravel and there is plent if it to run - also helps a little when that old gobbler sounds off in the distance in April

I have had two pairs of Brooks and I will have to say they are the greatest shoes nobody has ever heard of. I have run, walked, and trained in mine and they are awsome.

Most folks have never seen them or heard of them. My wife found them through a group of runners she was training with for a race. She and I both took the chance and have been blown away with the comfort.

thats a very generic question. Every one of the brands people have mentioned all have shoes based on your arch and gait. Just buying a shoe because of the brand is not going to mean it will be comfortable. Your arch and gait need to be evaluated by someone who does it all day and they will recommend a shoe from each of these brands and you can try. I bought shoes just on the brand for years and my feet always hurt. I am very flat footed so extra support is important. I have worn asics, brooks, new balance, mizuno, and saucony. I am currently wearing saucony and they are by far my favorite. They fit my foot well. I recommend easy runner on highway 10, they are very nice and knowledgeable and will let you try a bunch of different brands. good luck.

Well I went a different route when I baught me new shoes last week, I found a pair of Kswiss's at shoe carnival on clearence for $55 I had my wife create a spreadsheet for me so I can keep track of how many miles I get out of a pair of running shoes, wish I had done this with my Nike's last year.

I bought a pair of Mizuno wave riders the other day on sale for $79. They feel just like the high end Asics($120+) on my feet. I am very pleased so far.

I run in asics, but i have been thinking about making a change. It seemed like a hippy trend at first but i really want to try the vibram five finger foot gloves. Does anybody use them? I have a friend that uses them and he said they were amazing. He had terrible shin splints and leg pain, but he said after a few weeks with these he can run with no pain at all.

I have a friend who loves those things! And I am really thinking about trying a pair myself. I recently bought a pair of Reebok zigtech's and they are very comfortable and stable while running
