CNN) -- Military personnel threw away, and ultimately burned, confiscated Bibles that were printed in the two most common Afghan languages amid concern they would be used to try to convert Afghans, a Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday.

The unsolicited Bibles sent by a church in the United States were confiscated about a year ago at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan because military rules forbid troops of any religion from proselytizing while deployed there, Lt. Col. Mark Wright said.
Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said.
"The decision was made that it was a 'force protection' measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims," Wright told CNN on Tuesday.
Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said.
The Bibles were written in the languages Pashto and Dari.
This decision came to light recently, after the Al Jazeera English network aired video of a group prayer service and chapel sermon that a reporter said suggested U.S. troops were being encouraged to spread Christianity.

The military denied that earlier this month, saying much in the video was taken out of context.
"This was irresponsible and dangerous journalism sensationalizing year-old footage of a religious service for U.S. soldiers on a U.S. base and inferring that troops are evangelizing to Afghans," Col. Gregory Julian said.
The military says a soldier at Bagram received the Bibles and didn't realize he wasn't allowed to hand them out. In the Al Jazeera video, which shows the Bibles at the prayer service, an unnamed soldier says members of his church raised money for them.
The chaplain later corrected the soldier and confiscated the Bibles, Wright said.
Military officers considered sending the Bibles back to the church, he said, but they worried the church would turn around and send them to another organization in Afghanistan -- giving the impression that they had been distributed by the U.S. government.
That could lead to violence against troops or U.S. civilians, Wright said.

Al Jazeera English, a Qatar-based international news service, said its reporters tried to get a response from military officials for its story but were unable to do so.
The U.S. military air base at Bagram is home to thousands of troops from all branches of the U.S. military. The vast majority of the troops do not leave the base and are in various support roles for U.S. troops across Afghanistan.

While I really have no opinion on the burning itself. I don't support it, but they do have the right. I find it odd that Obama should speak out against a tiny church showing their butt and he didn't say a word about a the guy who published thousands of secret documents that put our troops in real danger. More so he didn't say anything about the web sight who published it. This Qua ran burning may make some Muslims mad, but they hate us anyway, so who really cares if they are a little madder for a day. But this guy and web sight actually gave away American secrets, the guy is guilty of treason and the owners of the web sight are guilty espionage.

I saw the article about Petraeus saying that this church was putting soldiers in harms way.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...753093116.html

I don't necessarily agree with the General. The bad guys are killing US soldiers anyways, this doesn't make crazy Arabs more apt to kill Americans. They're gonna find a reason to do it anyways...

Yeah it'll probably make Muslims mad. They should get over it. It probably even falls under freedom of speech. I'd be hacked if a Muslim burned a Bible. That doesn't mean I'm gonna go out and kill the next Muslim that I find.

Of course, I'm from a true religion, not a false one and I also have a rational mind and a good moral code...not to mention, grass, water, and not a whole lot of sand...

The pastor of this church plans on continuing with the plan. I personally, don't think it is wise to do. How are we to win Muslims to Christ if we intentionally insult them?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100907/.../quran_burning

But it's also not an "excuse" for Muslims to kill Americans. So, in this case, I believe Petraeus, Islam, and the Christian Pastor are all in the wrong. What say you?

Jim Neugent

In Mena , Arkansas

Writes To ABC Network
Jim Writes:

My name is Jim Neugent. I wrote to ABC (on-line) concerning a program called 'THE PRACTICE.' In last nights episode, one of the lawyer's mothers decided she is gay and wanted her son to go to court and help her get a marriage license so she could marry her 'partner.' I sent the following letter to ABC yesterday and really did not expect a reply, but I did get one.

My original message was:

ABC is obsessed with the subject of homosexuality. I will no longer watch any of your attempts to convince the world that homosexuality is OK. ' THE PRACTICE' can be a fairly good show, but last night's program was so typical of your agenda. You picked the 'dufus' of the office to be the one who was against the idea of his mother being gay, and made him look like a whiner because he had convictions. This type of mentality calls people like me a 'gay basher.'

Read the first chapter of Romans (that's in the Bible); and see what the apostle Paul had to say about it..... He, God and Jesus were all 'gay bashers'. What if she'd fallen in love with her cocker spaniel? Is that an alternative life style? (By the way, the Bible speaks against that, too.)
--Jim Neugent

Here is ABC's reply from the ABC on-line webmaster:

How about getting your nose out of the Bible (which is ONLY a book of stories compiled by MANY different writers hundreds of years ago) and read the declaration of independence (what our nation is built on), where it says 'All Men are Created equal,' and try treating them that way for a change!

Or better yet, try thinking for yourself and stop using an archaic book of stories as your lame crutch for your existence. You are in the minority in this country, and your boycott will not affect us at ABC or our freedom of statement.

Jim Neugent's second response to ABC:

Thanks for your reply. From your harsh reply, evidently I hit a nerve. I will share it with all with whom I come in contact. Hopefully, the Arkansas Democrat Newspaper will include it in one of their columns and I will be praying for you.

- -Jim Neugent- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Note: Wouldn't Satan just love it if people stopped using the Bible for a crutch?
Please resend this to everyone in your mailbox.

Jim Neugent

I wonder if the person from ABC considered how many people would eventually read this e-mail!

Please, if you are a Christian, pass this on to others so they may be aware.

WE NEED TO SAVE WHAT WE HAVE LEFT OF THIS COUNTRY!

::clap::up:

Calmer winds were in the forecast and authorities hoped to dump two to three times the amount of fire retardant from the air than they did Monday, when gusty winds grounded air tankers for much of the day, Boulder County sheriff's Cmdr. Rick Brough said. However, most tankers were still grounded at midday because heavy smoke made it difficult for pilots to see their targets although at least one was spotted dropping slurry earlier in the day.

Brett Haberstick, a fire marshal with the Sunshine Fire Protection District, said Monday the fire destroyed dozens of homes, but Brough had no exact figures Tuesday.

The blaze broke out in Four Mile Canyon northwest of Boulder and rapidly spread across 5 1/2 square miles, or 3,500 acres. Erratic 45-mph gusts sometimes sent the fire in two directions at once. Brough said there is no indication it was intentionally set.

Crews managed to save the historic town of Gold Hill, including an Old West grocery store and structures once used for stagecoach stops. Firefighters had to relocate their engines and equipment several times to avoid the flames.

Four homes belonging to firefighters were destroyed. Those firefighters were allowed to leave to attend to their families and personal affairs, said Laura McConnell, a spokeswoman for the fire management team.

Nancy Engellenner and husband Philip Helper assume their house was lost because so much was destroyed in the surrounding area.

"The way the wind was, it was just spitting flames everywhere," Engellenner said.

Resident David Myers also feared his house burned after he fled. At one point, he said heavy smoke obscured flames from the fire but he could still hear it, sounding like a cross between a freight train and a long roll of thunder.

"You can hear the crackling, you can hear just this consumption of fuel, just crackling and burning. And at that point, it was time to go," he said.

The lack of information about the fire damage frustrated residents who gathered for a morning briefing.

"There's no information about anything ... I am so frustrated," said Ronda Plywaski. She said that she, her husband and their two German shepherds, Loki and Doba, left their home Monday after getting a reverse 911 call. They spent the night at the evacuation center at Colorado University.

"I just want to know if my house is OK," she said.

After the briefing, evacuees stood in small groups exchanging stories and information. Some hugged; others wiped away tears.

On Monday, winds pushed the fire through three canyons where pine trees have been left prone to fire by disease, drought and beetles that burrow under the bark of pine trees, fire managers said. Such beetles have killed more than 3.5 million acres of trees in Colorado and southeastern Wyoming.

The evacuation was hampered by a failure of the county's automated phone alert system. Brough said the system was down for about two hours Monday, leaving authorities to rely on the media to get out word of the fire.

"Whether they fixed it or healed itself, we don't know," Brough said of the system.
