Doves?

How was opening day around the state? I heard a good bit of shooting Saturday morning. I had planned to go on a good hunt but backed out and decided to just see if I could get a few here at the house. Got 10 and should have downed a few more but they are hard for me to hit ducking in and out of the timber. I was only about 80 yards from the house and Tarbaby retrieved them and I got to break in a new shotgun, so it was a fun morning. :thumb:

round here wasn't that bad. Quite abit of shooting around us, we did a little bit, that last 15-30 minutes were just crazy though...

I took a limit yesterday, but had to work for them. We found a cotton field they were staying in. But you had to walk the rows and jump shoot them. It reminded of my younger days quail hunting. You had to just about step on them to make them flush out. I think I enjoyed that more than the sit and wait for them to come to you.

My grandson and I got our limits opening day. We were invited to go on a private hunt south of Paragould, by some guys I grew up with. There was tons of shooting and lots of birds. I am blessed to have such good friends. Buck

We had a good hunt yesterday morning. I think there were about 20 people in the field I was hunting and I only talked to one guy who didn't get his limit. A buddy and me set up in the worst spot in the whole field. We only shot about 5 or 6 times in the first 45 minutes. We moved after some other guys got their limit. We finished up shortly after moving. All in all it was a good hunt. The best part was that several folks didn't want their birds so I ended up bringing 68 doves home with me. :thumb:

had about 60 acrers of standing wheat with hundreds of doves right before season, then they decided to go elsewhere :frown:

My family has a farm in Texas, so it is a ritual to spend opening weekend down at the camp. This year we were over run with White Wing Dove, I am not sure but I think those sorry suckers were wearing bullet proof vests! You could hit them with every last pellet and the darn thing would keep on flying! I was looking for some morning doves by the end of the weekend.

The other strange thing, was how high the birds were flying! Reminded me of Duck season!

Might need to try full choke loaded with high brass 6's next time. :biggrin: hate them low brass 8's , even though they will work for low flying birds . Have seen some squirrel hunters try to use those low brass bird shot. The trees are so tall most of the time ,they just sting them. :smack:

I settled on a modified choke and 7 1/2 shot. If they promise the same next year, my buddy and I are reloading some 3 or 3 1/2 inch dove loads. I might not be able to shoot as many, but I WILL get what I am shooting at!

Dad was pretty successful with some highbrass 7 1/2's but they were a real heavy load 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 ounces. His pocket book is a little deeper than mine!
