OK all you squirrel hunters. Season's almost upon us so let's start hearing what you guys and gals are doing to get your dogs and/or yourselves ready for the season.
Bought any new squirrel hunting gear? Got a new dog you haven't hunted yet?
How many of y'all plan on hunting opening morning.... and where?
Anybody gonna set up a squirrel camp? Gonna fry up any squirrel and bake a few biscuits and make gravy. Just exactly where will this camp be located?

WW, I will be having a camp stay at my place and hunting Harold Alexander, opening weekend. I believe we got about 14 folks going that post on here. Should be a really nice time to get back into the woods, and cook some squirrels.

Don't forget to take your camera so you can post pictures of the hunt when you get back!

Anyone else plan on going squirrel hunting opening day or setting up an early season squirrel camp for a few days?
Do you guys and gals wait til after most of the leaves have fallen before you start hunting your dogs... or do you hunt them all season?

I have a feist pup that is about to turn 8 months old. I was hoping to have her treeing a little by the season opener, but I don't think she is going to be quite ready. She did tree 1 time at about 5 months old, but hasn't since then. Last time I took her out she looked real good at first, she winded a squirrel and stood on some trees and I thought she was going to tree, but then we came across 2 kitten coons and when they ran up the tree, she kept on going and never saw them go up. But I've kept her in the woods all summer and she leads and loads real good, she just has a lot of learning to do.

My brother-in-law and I are planning a jug fishing/squirrel hunt camping trip to Lake Ouachita. Years ago did that every weekend in September and October. Would like to start that tradition again.

I worked on the Mt. Magazine Ranger District for four years 1970-74. Some of the best squirrel hunting I have ever experienced was on the first bench going South out of Paris. It is called Red Bench on the map. There was hundreds of acres of some of the best hardwood forest anywhere on the North side of Red Bench. Lots of big ole hickory trees there for the squirrels.
I used a Mossburg model 351K .22LR with a Weaver K-4 scope. I finally wore it out and traded it off. I kept the scope and still have it. Good ole days! :thumb:

Ever since my son was old enough to walk (he's 20 now) we always make opening weekend of squirrel season. Not planning on breaking the tradition any time soon. Haven't bought anything new. We'll still be hunting with the Marlin 17's, easing throught the early morning woods looking for the leaves moving in the tops of the oaks and hickorys.
Can't wait!! :thumb:

I had a little piece of heaven up between sand gap and ben hur back some 10 15 years ago, then we had the die off of oaks:mad: ruined a great place to hunt bushy tails.
I love those old long ago used logging roads, slipping through the morning mists and popping a few grey squirrels, hearing the cry of the piliated wood pecker that they think is the long gone ivory billed woodpecker:biggrin: hearing the bone chilling buzz of the rattlesnake:smack: and eating the spider webs of them little hard woods spiders,,,,,,,,yep, I can't wait!

Those boys up in Dover are going to have a field trial on the opening day . I don't think I want to run dogs on opening day. Might make a bunch of folks mad. I might slip out somewhere if its not to hot . I think the woods down on the Fouche might be getting good since the ice storm a few years back. That was some nice woods before the storm.

Back about 1980's , we hunted north of Booger holler. Up #7 about a mile or so on the east side was a logging road. It took a 4WD to drive down at that time. The Forest Service pushed it out and made an all weather road out of it later. :frown: We used to slaughter squirrel and see lots of other game. :thumb:

Do the hickory trees have a good crop of nuts this year ? I hunt east of #7 mostly, planning to go and check soon. A friend wants to hunt and does'nt know where to hunt. I think this possiably may be a good year for bushytails. Really like using a rifle , but hate early season because of all the leaves. :thumb:

Sounds good to me. I think Howard will come help from our club. I'll get there the day before and get set up. I'll help cook some breakfast too. I don't think getting a spot should too bad then either, but I'll check into it. They also have a pavillion.

Ouch! For the price of gas you could be in the real outdoors.

Each to their own but most of the time each following year expos are a repeat. It's nuts for me to go every year. I would like to go to the Buck Expo just to see the antlers though. WW or Retired how about posting a thread about a fish fry get together on a different forum .
(CAMPFIRE?) I'm sure this may interest several on the forum. There are a lot of us ,squirrel hunters or not might like.a fish fry get togather. :thumb:

Thanks xring, I forgot everyone does not read the squirrel hunting forum. I've got some catfish and crappie and if anyone can help out with more fish that will help. I'll bring a fish cooker and we'll probably need another. I'll get stuff for hush puppies, taters and slaw. Bring something to drink and anything extra you want. I think we have oil left over from our last fry. I'll get some biscuits, gravy mix, eggs, sausage etc for anyone who wants breakfast if you have any of that stuff leave it down there friday nite. I think we'll be fine.

I've got all kinds of cookers, so let me know what all you'll need, be nice if the weather is not to hot to make a weekend out of it. I figure Fish has fish aplenty:biggrin: I'd have to slip off over here at night, my ole bones don't adjust to different sleeping conditions very well.
Bet it would be fun if a few would show up.....x

Drinks are optional and beer is fine.I'll try and get a place picked out the middle of next week. I'll be in Mt View this weekend and I'll be back in touch. Thanks, I've got a couple of dogs I'll bring just cause they really want to get out , but you can do better still hunting this time of year.

I will probably set up squirrel camp in a different location this year because I went to check things out the other day and there aren't any woods there anymore. The whole area has been cut down. I was really looking forward to this year's camp too.
WENT DOWN THE RIVER IN A CANOE(WHEN I WAS'NT OUT DRAGG'N IT :smack: )YESTERDAY IN SCOTT COUNTY. SAW 2 TURKEY AND SQUIRRELS WERE PLENTIFUL. THE SQUIRREL WERE FEEDING IN SMALL TREES NEXT TO THE RIVER WITH SOME TYPE OF SEEDS ON THEM . :thumb:

Looks like its going to stay warm this week but nights in the 60's, so thats good. I'm back from Mt. View. Ricky Scaggs put on a good show and we heard good music on the square too. If you've never been to Mt. View you've missed some good clean fun. It's still dry up there and the squirrels are cutting hickories early in the morning. I'm still going down to Sunlight bay Friday and plan on cooking some catfish and crappie. Like to meet fish if I havn't met him before. May not kill many squirrels with dogs but they want out mighty bad.

I'm getting my clothes and food ready today. I'll get out some fish to thaw for tomorrow. I'll get out several packs but don't know exactly how many are comming. Won't hurt to cook some extra cause I like those left over fish anyway. Bring some too Fish and we'll have enough. If WW shows up we'll need more anyway. I'll be out of touch Friday. See ya.

Where map shows to Conway should be Perryville most folks leaving Conway or LR go through there . :thumb:

Well fish.... if I had wanted it to say Perryville where it says Conway it would say Perryville. But since no one from Little Rock said they were coming over and folks from Conway said they were, I felt it more appropriate to use Conway instead of Perryville. So now you know the rest of the story.... but thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to express your concern! http://www.arkansashunting.net/images/smilies/rolleyes2.gif http://www.arkansashunting.net/images/smilies/cool2.gif

Not too many came, but the fish was good. Fish brought good slaw and onions. Too bad it was so dry in the woods. Made the hunting hard but the still hunters killed some. We treed some with the dogs and killed a few. Ticks didn't bother us any and I wonder how they were in the mountains. It getting serious dry.

I had planned to be there but my boss asked me to work on saturday. Friday afternoon he called and had changed his mind. When I saw that the temps were going to be in the 90s I decided to hunt close to the house saturday morning because my brother in law (a great guy) needed me to help him that afternoon. Maybe we can get together when the weather won't be so hot.

We had hot weather at Hardy also but didn't have any problems with ticks and chiggers that I know of! Skwerls were pretty scarce also!
