I was thinking about going squirrel hunting in the sylamore area, i live in mtn. home and the squirrel population seems to suck and my dad told me a long time ago that they used to go hunting at sylamore and was plentiful for grey squirrels and would like you guys/gals feedback maybe best location to go within the management area itself.

Go by the Forest Service office or the visitor center at Blanchard Springs Caverns and you can purchase a map that shows the National Forest land and the roads. Stand back 12 feet and throw a dart. Where that dart hits start hunting. Works every time, but be sure you do not get on the private property that is scattered throughout the forest. The Forest Service people you get the map from can help you with this.
Mostly gray squirrels but some fox squirrels along the edges of the fields and wildlife openings. Be careful about snakes on the opening weekend until first frost. If you see a hog kill it. Good luck......

We'll be at fifty-six on Oct 8th for a sq. dog field trial. You can use dogs in there as long a its not gun deer season. I believe. Squirrels are kinda wild when the leaves are on but its a nice area.

Went camping up there about a month ago. LOTS of squirrels this year. I saw probably 50 on 1 hike alone.. I sure wish my wife would have let me bring my feist pup!

I have been known to go squirrel hunting with less than five minutes notice, anytime. I usually prefer to still hunt with a .22 LR, but would also enjoy a good dog hunt.

P/s I just made a perfect head shot on a viscous ground squirrel that was destroying my wifes flower bed. Well it was only five yards, but still a perfect shot with #12 rat shot.

About three years ago I walked down that road we turkey hunted on and I bet I saw at least 50 fox squirrels. I had a fifty cal. muzzleloader with me as it was first day of the ML deer season. between the ML season and MG season I went back with my .22LR and got a nice limit of fox squirrels. Someone also found them and really worked them over with a shotgun before I got a chance to go back. There must of been a hundred spint shotgun shells in the road. I have not been back since but with the dry weather it might be a good idea to check that area because it is close to water.
Give me a hollor and I will go with you sometime.
