Has anyone seen any of these flying squirrels lately. I use to see one now and then when I was a kid but that has been about 50 years or so ago. Of course the tops of them trees are a little farther up there now.

About 8/10 years ago, we had a big pin oak back of the well house, probably close to 4' through at the base, the main body of the tree forked out about 25' above ground, in a high wind it split maybe 6 feet right down the middle, ( apparently it had been split for years but went unnoticed as it was black from the elements ) we hired it cut down and in the crack there was two crushed flying squirrels, so unlike the ivory billed woodpecker, these two ain't coming back!
I don't know if they were crushed from the wind twisting the gnarled old oak, or if the slam on the ground was the killer. Either way, that was the last sighting I have had of the little flying squirrels.:frown:

There are plenty of flying squirrels in my neighborhood. Last year one got into my basement and eat up a couple of real nice turkey tail mounts. Never could figure out how it got in, but I was able to get it out a door by using a blanket to slowly drive it toward the door. :thumb:

We had one come into the house one night, about a week ago, looks like through the chimney. I chased it into one of our fake bushes in the living room where it froze, thinking I didn't see it. It was shaking so badly from fright that it allowed me to pick up the tree and carry it outside where it quickly darted up the oak tree in my front yard. We have a good population of them around here and I like to go outside at night to fire them up. I make a light sqeaking noise with my lips and they answer me back from the trees. Drives my weiner dog nuts.

My in-laws have some down the road from us and its fun to watch them. I had never seen one till I married. One evening one came out of the tree and landed on the house and I nearly fell out. I thought it was just an ordinary squirrel until it showed off. It was a treat.
