I kept my eye open for squirrels during the turkey season. I did not see enough squirrels to even consider a hunt. The lack of acorns this past winter has hurt our ozark squirrel population and it may be worse than I thank it is right now.
Anyone seeing any spring squirrels? :thumb:

Sylamore I counted 15 on my feeder behind the cabin yesterday  You know where I'll be saturday morning now :thumb:
I went fishing this morning and every time I looked at the bank , there was a tree rat. The waters edge is a great place to hunt. The squirrels get water and there is always food sources near water. Fish and hunt out of your boat

There are plenty of squirrels in the city limits of Mountain View. I drive through a residential area every day going to and from my mothers house. There is a squirrel that I see on Vine St. across from the Baptist Church, that does not have a tail. It is a two year old squirrel and is one strange looking dude.
I have been seeing more Fox squirrels than Grays.
Post your success with the squirrels. May help me get my enthusiasm up to give it a go. :thumb:

I'm not to crazy about spring squirrel season even though I usually try an go once or maybe twice each season to get my mom a few to cook. It's much harder to locate them in the spring than in the fall for me plus I just love walking around the woods and listening for the acorns falling from the trees and anticipating deer season during the fall hunt.
Around these swamplands a spring time squirrel hunt would mean you have to spend more time watching the ground where you step than looking up in the trees for squirrels. So with that I really do not want any squirrels that bad.

You gotta watch for Rattleheadedcoppermoccasins in these Ozarks too. If I kill a squirrel and it is on the ground I really look the area over before I pick it up. If I find a snake near the squirrel, I assume it has been bitten and I leave it.
But, I have had some really fun spring squirrel hunts and some have been from a boat. :thumb:

Spring squirrels, what memorys, I completely ruined the finish on a new browning shotgun back in the early 70s, mosquito repellant and some gun stock finishes do not mix! It turned into a gummy mess before I got in from a mornings hunt.
My yard is over loaded with fox squirrels, always have several but seems like this spring is exceptional for them. Also seeing quite a few cotton tail rabbits in the yard this year, more also than normal. Crows are raiding the song bird nests in the yard also, If I had fewer neighbors there would be fewer crows!

You should see the plastic windshield on my Bass boat. A good spray of repellant into the wind and it is no longer clear plastic. :smack:
