View Full Version : How many love to squirrel hunt?

I remember following my dad through the woods, he loved to hunt the little fuzzy tailed creatures. He would tell me to step where he stepped and I would fall trying to make those long steps. Didn't know what he was going through till I took my 5 year old at the time. I could have lead a baby elephant through the woods and not made as much noise. :smack:
But on that trip we managed to kill 3 and he got his first shot at one with the .410 that I used when I was his age.
I guess I started hunting much as many of you did chasing squirrels and rabbits and then later hunting turkey and deer. Man how we don't need to let the small game hunting tradition pass our children by.
With all this said how many of yall still love to squirrel hunt, and do you hunt in the northern or southern zone, or both? With the southern zone opening sooner I plan to hunt in both this year. :thumb:

Used to love it as a kid, don't go much anymore. All my extra time goes into deer and turkey hunting. I think I will start taking my daughter soon though. Best way I know to get someone started hunting.

Next best huntin to deer and turkey. I have the biggest and fatest tree rats ya'll seen. I have a seperate feeder for them, just to fattin them little goodies up. I love eatin squirrel. After all these years I still can't get the Mrs. to eat squirrel. I started out the same way with dad and my little 410 Ithaca single barrel shot gun, in the wood of California, Las Padre National Forest. What fond memories, thats Dodge for the little walk threw memory lane. :thumb:

I love to hunt cat squirrels, or greys, with my .22, I never cared much for scatter gunning them. Gotta love the squirrel opener, but hate the copper heads that you have to watch for! I personally believe that when a young one can get out and kill his limit of squirrels with a .22,,,he won't have much trouble filling his deer tags later. Take'em hunting boys, we need the young ones on our side!

Good news Rattle.... found the squirrel picture. Guess now I'll have to apologize for that snide remark about Dodge and management!http://www.arkansashunting.net/images/smilies/smack.gif
But I was afraid Dodge would really have it deleted if I posted it in this thread so I posted it in Campfire under "Funny Pictures". Although I see there's already been at least one picture posted in this thread that should have been posted over in Campfire in that "Funny Picture" thread! http://www.arkansashunting.net/images/smilies/smack.gif

When my wife and I were dating some 25 years ago I would take her. And X I gave her a 22 to use. I had heard her shoot a few times so I eased back her way with my 4 or 5 and saw her watching a tree closely before I got to her she shot again and down came the squirrel. I walked quitely toward her as she was picking it up. I smiled and told her I had heard several shots from this direction. She quickly turned around as she was putting her 4th squirrel in her game bag. Get this, all shot through the head. She is still a good shot, she just doesn't have as much time as she did back then or feel the need to impress me with her shooting. She knows shes got me wrapped around her finger. I may need to go this year so my mom in law can fix her squirrel and dumplings.

I love to hunt squirrels after the leaves start falling. Usually with my 22 rifle ,makes some good practice before deer season. Don't really understand them opening season earlier and earlier up here last several years! September is just too HOT!!!and they still got littlins in the nests. :frown:

I just don't seem to have time to go any more - but I sure have enjoyed it when I have gone.
I really prefer later season (leaves shed) hunting with my .22 than I do with the shotgun. Plus - I don't like finding shot in a bite of squirrel!

Oneshot, They can't do that here, Scared some one will shoot a deer or turkey.
When you hear a gun shot after turkey season closes, its either
someone being murdered or a poacher!
This is my pet peeve with the Arkansas Game and Fish! I used to dearly enjoy roaming the woods of Arkansas with a firearm and take shots at tin cans, snakes, turtles, armidillos, etc.
When I was a young man, 12 or 13 Years old,They built a new bridge across Whig creek just east of the Arkansas river bridge at Dardanelle, I had a colt frontier scout .22 pistol and I sat on that bridge rail and shot turtles and snakes in whig creek many days. This is on State Hwy. 7, passing motorists would honk and wave, today the Swat team would instantly pass judgement, and shoot you DEAD! Of course we live in different times these days and I certainly wouldn't want to pass some kid sitting on the bridge shooting turtles and snakes, I would probably assume he was practiceing for the next school shooting spree!:frown:
Times have changed, the old days are gone, so are many of our freedoms, I just have a hard time changing with them sometimes!
Sorry for rambling!

X-ring, I liked your post too and I don't think there is nothing wrong with switching off on the subject a little either. It sort of keeps things interesting. I remember the first time I got in trouble for shooting a target and it was back in 1976 a few miles from nowhere, on the wrong side of the Texas state line. I had bought a new shotgun barrel in Longwiew and wanted to pattern it before I went hunting. I stopped on the side of a road out in the middle of nowhere and shot a #8 into a piece of paper and was looking over the pattern when here comes two police cars in on me like I had robbed a bank or killed somebody. Like to have scared me to death. They were going to take me to jail but an old boy I worked with happened along and talked them into going easy on me this first time because I was just a harmless country bumpkin from Arkansas and things were different there and therefore I did not understand how things were in east Texas. I worked just long enough in Texas to know I liked Arkansas a lot better even if there were not any jobs in Arkansas at least we could shoot our guns and go hunting anywhere we wanted to within reason. Now, thirty some odd years later, we still ain't got no jobs in Arkansas and we can't shoot a gun or hunt where we want to neither. What is the world coming to?:frown:

Bodcau boy I guess it is ok for moderators to switch off topic, just as long as none of us do it. I didn't like the way the moderators ganged up on Don about his post. Don pmed me and said he was just ribbing X, and all yall took it the wrong way. Another typical misunderstanding, but how was yall to know since Don is a relatively new member.
I was just wanting to see who all still squirrel hunted. I would agree with Don if we want to reflect on the past I also have some stories I would like to share, but start a new thread. :smack:

I see absolutely nothing wrong with Xrings post,it was rather insightful and pleasing to hear some of our older members reflect on the good ole days. I dont think AR Don really meant it the way it sounded but hey thats computers for you....kinda hard to read between the lines from typed words alone.
We all stray off topic a little from time to time but as long as it is within the boudries of the original thread I see no problem with it.
I dont think the moderators jumped on anybody, they just happened to be online and post a response.....................no bigeeee.
We all have opinions and I think X handled it rather professionally as well as the others.
We have to remember to not get offended by someones opinion, everyone is welcome to have thier own whether we agree with it or not.

Dodge as far as I can tell I was the only one who made a comment and it was 'lighten up' . I haven't put on that much weight to where I could be refered to as a gang at least not yet. This thread has run back and forth from you being reminiscent in the first post to cooking to last years hunt and on. X was commenting on Oneshots post and adding his own observation between the two states. If Don was kidding around thats fine I just didn't see any smiley faces along with the other faces used. AR Don if you were just ribbing X and it offended you that I said "lighten up' I aplogize.
Signed,

I love to squirrel hunt!!!! My squirrel gun is a Marlin 1897 CL (39A)
http://www.reloadersnest.com/photoalbum/firstshot/1897CL_LL.jpg
But she's got a Burris 4-12X32 on her now. Eyes just got so I couldn't pick out the squirrels very well with the peep sight.
I also got a Jack Russel that just started treeing in the past couple of weeks. Plan to get here out a bit when spring season opens.
You guys have some kind of squirrel hunting get together? I've been to the Shawnee Squirrel Hunt (See http://www.marlinowners.com forums in remfire section) in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois the past couple of years. Sure would be nice to have a squirrel hunting get together right here in AR. When and where do you have this event? Please count me in if all are invited!!!!!

The inlay is actually a fox, but yes she is a shooter. Haven't been able to Max the Black Death Target yet but off the bench, group size is about 3/4" CTC @ 25Yds (sometimes 5/8") and that's at least minute of squirrel head...LOL :thumb:

What brand of ammo you feed it?

I tried a number of different types of ammo when I had the peep sight on her. CCI Green Tag, CCI Mini Mag, CCI Velociter, Fed Gold Metal Match, Lapua Super Club, RWS Target Rifle, Eley Club Match and Wolf Match-Target. She seemed to do just as well with the Wolf Match-Target as anything else. Also liked the CCI Velocitors.
Only thing I've shot in her since putting the scope on is the Wolf Match-Target. Planning to work my way back through the various brands and see how much difference the scope makes.
You're absolutely right about the firepower evolution...LOL  I was sitting on a deer stand about 4 years ago with squirrels running all over the place and just stopped for a moment & remembered all the fun I used to have as a kid shooting 22LR & squirrel hunting. Went out the next week and picked up the 1897CL.
I just recently switched deer rifles as well. Now using a nice light Rem 700 Mountain LSS in 7MM-08. She's a tack driver, a real pleasure to shoot, and all the power I'll ever need.
What flavor 22 rifle & ammo do you shoot?

My favorite .22 rifle is an old Remington 541-S, its favorite fodder is also wolf match target, a really awesome shooter, I, like you, tryed all the major brands, eley, lapua, cci-green tag, wolf match gold, its favorite is wolf match gold, but wolf match target is close behind and for the difference in price,,,well its good enough! I believe I paid $78.00 a brick, 500 rounds, vs. 24.00 for a brick of wolf match target.
Gotta love them .22s
