View Full Version : Frogging
Well its open, how many have went yet. I been out each night for a couple of hours. We have gotten 15 jumbos. I am into QFM and pass up the small frogs only going to gig the big ones. :D
If my boy was better at giggin we would have twice as many. I let him do most of the giggin I spot them and hold the spotlight. Been seeing alot of small frogs this year.

CDay, Are you gigging from a boat? I am thinking of trying it out. just don't know how to clean them. I think I have everything I need. A boat w/trolling motor, head lamp , gig. also was wondering when is the best time of the year to go?
Well first season opens on April 15th. So from now until about the end of May. Here once they start flooding the rice fields it is over because they are in the fields. We gig them off of ATV's running along the small field ditches.
Just be careful and watch out for snakes we seen about 10 of them last night.

This is a first for me, I havent gone frogg'n yet. I loaned my gig out to my cuz and he broke it or something, at any rate it b gone. I went to two different wally worlds and they were sold out so I'm frogless to date.
I did catch 12 bass today, nine keepers with the biggest weighing in at about 3 pounds.
Frog legs and gravy. Its very close to sex.I like those ole warm stormy nights for the frogs. sometimes I turn my light off and wait till they holler and go get em. :D

I'm ready to get out there and enjoy a nice peaceful night time float down the river.
I have heard that next year the commision is going to make it illegal to gig frogs over bait for the last 2 weeks of the season.

i heard that they were going to implement QFM statewide, i think there going to go with leg length restrictions. either that or 3 points or more on one side..........
QFM (Quality Frog Management) purpose is to reduce the taking of smaller frogs so that they will have the chance to mature.
The best method to insure this is by setting rules based on the inside spread between the eyes like 1". Frogs with a 1" inside spread are usually mature frogs with alot of mass and length to produce trophy size legs. :D

dont go forcing your trophy frog leg managment practices on me clyde!!!! graemlins/thumb.gif tongue.gif
Yeah well we even got FMAP (frog management assistance program) permits to even take more frogs then the daily baglimit. The PDB (private ditch biologist) was highly impressed with our strict QFM procedures he had AGFC issue us permits to take more frogs than the state wide daily bag limit. I think the minimum requirement to be in this program is you have to have 5 miles of ditches. :D

we dont have any ditches, how is that fair to us!!!! graemlins/smack.gif thats alright, we go for quality over quantity on this side of the state!!! :D
Quality, what quality? Man we got bigger frogs, fish, and deer over here. That is quality, however the scenery sucks though. :D

Rattle, Clyde is right on this one. The scenery does suck and the deer would get even bigger if they outlawed cotton. From what I could see, I think the women may be a little bigger there too. At least from what I saw at truck stops and Wal-mart. Oh, and I did a photo shoot in the big town of Black Oak. That's where I saw the big women.

CDay, I recently moved to Arkansas, did some frog gigging as a boy and want to do some with my boys now. However, I have no boat. I'm thinking of rigging up my crossbow to give myself a little advantage since I'm limited as to reaching them. Any thoughts? And I live in Hope - do you have any suggestions as to where I might find'em? Thanks, Coleman

I guess you could use a crossbow to frog hunt with. I don't know what the regs say about that. But let me tell you my experience with frogging with a bow. It was back in 1980 when we had a drought and this old oxbow lake and all the ditches had dried up. There was just enough water to float a boat. We had been getting our limit every time we went . Most of the bigger frogs were setting about 15 to 20 feet from the waters edge just on the other side of about 5 feet deep mud. I decided I would try to get them with a bow. I took a recurve and mounted a zebco 202 on it with duct tape and bought a two pronged fiberglass fishing arrow and attached it to the 12 pound test line that came on the real. ( poor people have poor ways) It worked great until I missed, whitch was about the second shot. My brand new arrow was stuck about half way in the mud. I couldn't get it out, and there were just about as many big cotton mouths on the bank as frogs so I finely had to cut the line. So if you try the crossbow don't miss unless you are where you can get your bolt out of the mud. Now I use a rod and real with a bright colored plastic worm rigged just like for fishing. It works great and doesn't waste any meat.

My ol' buddy Lost Creek speaks the truth (almost!). He's been on many a frog hunt with me in front of the boat (and some with him in front) and I can honestly say neither of us flinch at the sight of a cottonhead watermouth when a big ol' "Bud" frog is within reach! We also abide by QFM practices, but when it's a Bud, whatever is between us and the frog is just gonna have to deal with us! :thumb:
By the way....NO GIGS ALLOWED! But we do allow fishing tackle when riding the road ditches.

Have taken a good many frogs myself from the front of a boat. I will always prefer "grabbin" over giggin any day. I do understand that you have to have a gig riding the ditches like Clyde is doing. Have not tried the fishing pole thing myself. Personally, i prefer the medium sized frogs over the "chicken leg" sized frogs. They just cook up and eat better to me. Never have been snake bit but have had close calls. When you paddle up to Mr. Cotton close enough to hear him "puff" at you as a warning, you are way too close! Also have had water snakes swim between my legs while wading.

I'm with you on this one. From as far back as I can remember my Daddy use to take me frog hunting and we never used a gig. It was hands only. I remember wading in a bayou waist deep and snakes everywhere. For some reason I was always fearless when I was with my Daddy. I'd never wade a snakey bayou again.

Being a poor hillbilly a-growing up, we weren't allowed no fancy gig or even a hook on the end of that pole. You did it with your hands, or you didn't. Now, when I got old enough to go courting, my feller, he was a one of those flat-landers from Batesville, he interduced me to the joys of fishing fer frogs. now see, his daddy being a mechanic and all, they could afford them high faluting hooks and thangs. And he'd drive around the pond with a closed faced reel a-fishing for them frogs.
Honestly, Richard and I spent many dates at a pond, fishing for frogs. It was some of the best dates we had.
I married that flat-lander. I figured any fella that would take a girl frog fishing was worth keeping.
Last time I had frogs, I purchased them, and my Biology kids are currently cutting them apart. What fun!

That's a cute story Amy :thumb:
I haven't been frog giggin' in many years...almost as many years as I am old. I figure I'd enjoy it, but the wife isn't much on eating anything that swims, and not much better on anything that isn't storebought. Beats me where she got that knowing her family :head:
My father-in-law and his family grew up in Clarkridge about as poor as you could get. They never owned much of anything that someone else hadn't already wore out first. His Dad was a blacksmith, among other things, so he always had a respectable scrap pile. One of his more popular uses for wore out pitchforks was making gigs - those gigs had quite a reputation in the area for their quality and how they didn't dull when you gigged a rock. My FIL has a magazine article he loves to show off every now and then talking about his Dad's gigs. I don't think they spent much time fishing or gigging though. Those gigs were for paying customers!

Wes,
What would be your FIL's name? I'm almost sure my Dad, a Clarkridge native, has one of these gigs you are talking about. He won't let anyone look at it, much less use it.
Spent many a deer hunting day on Berry Knob with my Grandma Annes (Chandler).

That would be Roy Jr. Stone. Roy Stone (Sr.) made the gigs. If you know any Stones or Strains up that way, they're probably my in-laws...just don't tell anyone!

Yep. Dad has one of those gigs made by Roy.
My dad has retold many stories dealing with Roy Stone Sr and his family.

I've heard rumor that some of the large land owners have been bringing in Florida strain frogs off of a high fenced operation in Texas where they use AFI(artificial frog insemination). Wouldn't this make your frogs exotics and not eligable for the IBFA(International Bull Frog Association) record books. Besides, what about the ethics of hunting exotic ranch raised frogs? What about hunting these animals in an enclosure? Let's just get the AGFC involved.

Yeah, I've heard some crazy stories in the few years I've been a part of the Stone family. Every now and then I come across someone that can verify one of those stories, which makes 'em that much crazier  I'm not sure what the secret about those gigs is, and though I've seen one many times I have yet to put it to use.
My FIL still has the old blacksmith shop setup on his farm, and you wouldn't believe some of the tools, finished products and scraps of stuff in there. His Dad could weld about anything metal to any other kinda metal. He'd fix broken knives, make new ones, shoe horses, make an axe that would hold a sharp edge, and all sorts of other stuff. If he needed a tool he was probably more apt to make it than buy it. He knew how to weld, forge and heat treat any metal by the colors it turned in the fire and how it felt under the hammer. What he couldn't afford new he'd buy already wore out and figure out how to make it work. He was also big on making wagon wheels, and even used to hold the chuckwagon races at their farm for many years.
Where do you live now, Amy? If you're ever in the area I bet Roy Jr. would be awful happy to have you stop by - just be prepared to add a bunch of new (old) stories to your memory
