View Full Version : Squirrel Hunting Reports?

I have been layed up for the past few days trying to get my leg to stop hurting from stepping into a stump hole. I am beginning to wonder if it is ever going to heal up. It has been over a month now and I am still limping along.
The weather has been lousy for the past few days with high winds and very cold temperatures. Yesterdays high temp here was 35 degrees and I did not even see a squirrel in the yard.
So far I have harvested 73 squirrels and all of that was before the MG deer season started. Since then, when the weather is right I have not been able to go. Some of my buddies have reported seeing enough squirrels to fill a wheel barrow.
I have been thinking about a squirrel hunting trip over to H.E. Alexander WMA.
Anyone squirrel hunting?

There is a guy named Mike Freeze that lives in Mtn. View that has some good squirrel dogs. He hunts alot and will know where they are. You might get in touch with him.
A bunch of us hunted the north unit of the White River Refuge for a few days starting Dec. 1 and saw ALOT of squirrels. The south zone is only open to still hunting but they should be alot there as well.
I hope this helps and your leg gets better,
Chad

I live on the Spring River just north of Hardy and hunt H.A. quite a lot. The areas near the river and in the creek bottoms are teaming with tree rats. We've been taking limits every time we've been out this fall. Just make sure you don't have a centerfire rifle in the truck? LOL

Syl, since you first posted about stepping in that stumphole, I worried about ya....injuries tend to get slower to heal as we get on up in age. I've got a few that just are not resolving. I've been told it's because I never rested long enough.....but I can't seem to find enought time these days. About a jillion SQs on Tulip creek....leaves are gone too....anybody needs a little ringneck feist, and a wheelbarrow! :thumb:

Syl, hope that leg gets healed up quick. I must have missed the thread where you talked about hurting it. Hope you didn't do the same thing I did two years ago. We were squirrel hunting with the dogs and had a squirrel leave out running for his life. I had to hustle around a bit to get a good shot and stepped in a stump hole. I was down right there. They had to carry me out of the woods. That was in January and I was still pretty slow getting around during turkey season. Turns out I partially tore my Achilles. Not a real fun deal.
You certainly have my sympathy.
Now, on to the squirrel report.
Last Saturday morning there were squirrels running everywhere around my stand. Went down that afternoon and didn't see but one. Go figure.
Sunday afternoon we went out in the heat and misting rain and managed to kill 12 with the dog. Would like to go hunting this weekend but it's a little hot for my liking.

I know Mike and Lori, but not very well. I used to work with Lori's dad in the Forest Service here. I know they have some really good squirrel dogs and like to participate in organized squirrel dog trials.
I think squirrel hunting would be better on the leg than putting up Christmas decorations in the yard. :smack:

John, this ole leg has had an internal infection and has been as hot as a firecracker for about four weeks now. It is like having a bad sunburn from the inside out and the skin is evening pealing like a sun burn. I have been to see the doc three times. He is a big deer hunter and I sure enjoy talking with him. He will check out the leg for 30 seconds, write a prescription and tell me to try this. Then we talk about deer hunting, squirrel rifles and archery for 30 minutes. His office looks like a taxidermy shop. I tell my buddies if they ever go there be careful not to bump their head on the Buffalo head mount when you go back to the exam room. You would have to see his office to believe it.
I guess the leg is gradually getting better. The doc told me it would take a long time to heal. Probably as close as a man can get to a broken leg without an actual break.
A good squirrel hunt should take my mind off of it for a while. :thumb:

Thanks for praying for my ole hide. I had an ultra sound to check for blood clots. That was a slick $300. No blood clots though, so that was good to know. :thumb:

Still hurts and very red. I went squirrel hunting this evening and it is the first time I have been in the woods in over a week. I'm not very stable on it yet. No squirrels this evening, they just did not stir at all.
Lots of deer sign everywhere I went along with a lot of hog sign. :thumb:

The squirrels were all over the place down here yesterday. I just got to watch a few playing outside the office window at work but my dad and a neighbor made a little round (didn't start till around 3:30) with my dad's new squirrel dog and killed 14.
The time is right for chasing bushy tails with dogs!
Hope that leg gets better in a hurry, Syl!

I just got back in from feeding the livestock[one rabbit and one horse....only fell down twice] Lord, we old veterans seem to wear out early, but me and Syl, have faith, that just a touch from your healing power will help us make it through; so together we pray, in Jesus name...amen!

John, are we gonna have to take up a collection and get you some football cleats so you can get a grip on this wet, slick ground? :thumb:
It sounds like you may be falling down more than me... and that's saying something. :thumb:

And I even had my knee brace on....that ole horse looked at me as if I was drunk!

You're gonna have to have more than a knee brace if you keep falling.
Reckon we could outfit you with some sort of padded suit!?

Well Syl I guess I missed the post about the leg too. I will be praying for you to heal up fast. I wanted to go this morning but I just couldn't make my self get out there. I don't hardly eat any squirrel much any more, but my grandpaw loves them. He isn't able to get out there and hunt anymore so I figure I better start huntin them things again and get some for mama to fry up. Boy I can remeber growing up and all the whole family gathering for squirrel and gravy, man you throw in some big ole biscuits and a pot of purple hull peas that was some sure enough good eatin.:thumb:

Stay away from the Smithville area. There are No acorns and NO squirrels. They must have migrated out since the acorns did not make from the frost.

I killed three Gray squirrels this morning in about 10 minutes behind my house. They were all over the place this morning but I did not have much time to hunt them properly.
Those three squirrels were really fat and healthy. I have got to get back in the squirrel woods this next week. :thumb:

We killed 5 squirrels this morning and the dogs let one run right between them and get in a hole. This afternoon we killed 11 and let one get away. The hunting this afternoon was pretty rough though. We were hunting in some of the darndest thickets I've ever chased squirrels in.
Syl, how's that leg doing?

Good to hear that it's doing better. My back was giving me fits on Friday. I had to take the dogs out for 3 hunts over the weekend for rehab purposes. :thumb:
