THE HARE AND THE HOUND

As a youngster my favorite hunting was the Rabbit, I never had a pack of beagles,,but had one beagle dog named shorty,,he and I spent many winter days in the game covers along the arkansas river,,swamp rabbits were our favorite, with the cottontail a close second,,How many of our members are rabbit hunters and do you keep a pack of rabbit hounds?
Its hard for me to imagine a better life for a boy than this,,we lacked alot of material things but never felt poor,,we were rich and didn't realize it!! xring

Well X your right of course!! I grew hunting with three beagles, rabbits mainly, they are a blast to hunt. Even chased a few deer when we could find them.
Unfortunately I've just started to learn how UNETHICAL I was for chasing game with dogs. Oddly enough, I even remember other folks wanting dad and I to go hunting with them and everyone having a great time.
I hate to see those days go!!

My first beagle was a bassett cross. Got him for free when I was 10 because he was gun shy. Didn't have a problem with my old Pearson recurve though. I can't tell the number of rabbits I shot from tree stumps with that old bow. I think rabbit hunters would be surprised at the number of rabbits they could kill with a bow. Those little cottontails would try and circle on old slow Bozo and try to slip by him just to get slammed by an arrow. Man I miss those days.

Xring, my little brother is a rabbit hunting FREAK...he doesnt even deer hunt...and runs his dogs year round and in field trials...i think he has 9 or 10 beagles now...he doesnt even carry a gun...kind of odd that a young person doesnt even want to do a little shooting...he says he gets more enjoyment in watching the dogs work...which is alright with me if its alright with him. Im sure if you wanted to tag along one day with him, he would be more than happy to have you. :D

xring, I have 3 medium sized Beagles that run rabbits. When I had to give up fox hunting I got the Beagles just so I could hear a race now and then. I seldom kill one ahead of them but they sound pretty good sometimes. I just open the pen gate and let 'em go. I have not turned them out since last Thursday and they are getting pretty mad at me. It ain't a good fox or coyote race, but it beats the heck out of nothing. smile.gif
