I would first like to welcome old hounddogman from Virginia, I would like to have been in a little honey hole anywhere over here.

We live in town, on the edge and the milo field behind us has been cut, and a guy mowed the end by the river and they were dove hunting in city limits, woke me up at 6:00 and then they sprinkled the house a few times then they started shooting skeet by the old factory, about 12:00 I had heard enough, so I call the poice department to find out the mayor said he allowed shooting in the city limits. So what did I do I got my shotgun went and sat on the tailgate of my truck and started blasting, shot a whole box of light loads. My son and dad showed up from there hunt and we got the skeet thrower out and started shooting them. Then the doves started flying over and we started blsting them, me and my son killed about 10 in the back yard and field, and for good measure we shot about 12 boxes of shells. Was just waiting for the police, I am sighting my rifle in tomorrow about 11:30. Deerhunter you need to bring the boys over we still have some more skeet. graemlins/thumb.gif

Mr. C there was no shooting this morning, I guess the mayor only allowed it for one day, I have more shells and will be shooting tomorrow if everyone else is. They weren't out there today, so we didn't go either. I was just doing what I was told I could do, people can't bowhunt in city limits of some towns and our redneck mayor lets us dove hunt with shotguns, no wonder we are called rednecks. I did shoot the pistol a time or 10 yesterday also. I like to blast one every now and then reguardless of the law just to let the neighbors know I am a little crazy and they better know where the property line is. It don't have to be 4 of July for me to have some fireworks. graemlins/thumb.gif

Hey, deerhunter,,,any of the hunters from around wattensaw? Wonder what the squirrel population is like there this year?

I started a topic in campfire about the poor mast crop here in the river valley,,,I went to the mountains yesterday, had a fair crop of whiteoak acorns in the area I hunted, but few or no hickery nuts. I hope its just a few areas as our deer herd needs the acorns to make a comeback.

I saw two little bucks over Bayou Deveiw today, two spikes, one with velvet and one without. They walked up together and got within about 18 or 20 yards of me. I had just shot a squirrel and was walking over to pick it up when they walked up on me.

I got 14 in 2 days. Used the 20 guage on Saturday and got 6 with 6 shots. Used the 12 guage on Sunday and missed 2 running. Had 2 that hung up in trees and I had to shoot them twice. Took 12 shots for 8 squirrels that day.

dspeakes

I never use a 22 this time of the year. Way too many leaves on the trees. Still can't believe it took extra shots to get my limit on Sunday. They were just jumping between the trees too fast for me. graemlins/smack.gif

Yes, I changed to another 40 acres for Sunday. I didn't see very many hickory nuts at all. The squirrels were cutting acorns.

With a .22 and a scope, I can pick out shots, no matter how many leaves. To me, a shotgun is more of a hindrance when there's a lot of vegetation.

dspeakes
09-07-2004, 11:19 AM
Maybe it is a confidence thing. I have been shooting a shotgun for over 30 years. I do use a 22 late season when all the leaves are gone because I can take longer shots that way.

DODGEMAN
09-07-2004, 06:20 PM
Darrell, I look at it like this, if you are going to rifle hunt alot, especially with you scope mounted on your rifle without see through mounts, then you should squirrel hunt with a .22 that is rigged up the same way. This gives you predeer season practice. I bowhunt 95% of the time and when I do gun hunt I don't even take my rifle, let my son do all the shooting. But I feel someone that does deerhunt with a rifle, they should squirrel hunt with a scope mounted .22, just for the practice. JMO

Nope I did not go tree rat hunting. I spent the three days shooting at doves and drinking alot of beer. I think I drunk as many cases of beer as cases of shotgun shells I shot. But I did have a good time. Micah shot more doves than I did. He did pretty good, it was nice to just sit back and watch him shoot.

I figure I will get out and shoot some tree rats after shutdown. It just ain't any challenge to get a limit of treerats and that is using a .22 caliber rifle.
