Early fall, shotgun with 6 shot, if we have alot of squirrels Ruger 10/22 with solid nose Winchesters. Love squirrel hunting. Love eating squirrels, you are just fishing for the NEAB first annual squirrel hunt and cookout, aren't you deerhunter? graemlins/smack.gif

Mountainbuck, thr 541S has been discontinued for about 20 yrs. I think, its a bolt action clip feed .22 and of course you know what the speedmaster is,,,They made a 541T after they discontinued the "S" but it wasn't nearly the rifle the "S" is. Did not have the adjustable trigger, left off a lot of the pretty's, the 541S has 6 locking lugs on the rear portion of the bolt. They are really good shooters,,,,xring

They are great 22's, I got mine for Christmas when I was 14. There is no telling how many 1000's shells have been shot through it and it still shoots great. Looks pretty rough though!!! Sure wouldn't win no beauty contest!!

I read somewhere that you could never wear the barrel out on a .22 rimfire and I believe that is true,,,Minimal clean up,,,I clean the barrel on mine when the groups start to open up,,,usually around 800 to 1000 rds. After I clean it, it takes about 100 rds. for it to start shooting tight groups again,,,I know that does not make sense, but it is a fact....of course I pull the bolt and use a little solvent on Q-Tips to clean the bolt face and the face of the chamber,,,,very necessary as the .22 rimfire headspaces on the "Rim" That ain't just my opinion, thats how it is!!!!xring ;)

Give me a few weeks and I will tell you if we need to do it in Sept. or in Feb., just don't tell them YCB they probably can't kill any squirrels and would probably eat twice that many? graemlins/smack.gif

Sling shot using wheel bearings for shot. I'm deadly anywhere from 1-5 feet...beyond that, I just know the direction the bearing went...
Anybody ever a "barked" a squirrel? If you do, make sure you are quick to knock it in the head when you pick it up. ;)

I'm glad that someone finally stepped up and mentioned the sport of "barking". We use to do this all the time and were laughed at if we made a head shot. Ahhh, for the good ole days!!! graemlins/thumb.gif

Did the game and fish finally take that out of the books? It used to be legal to shoot sguirrels and rabbits with a high powered rifle during deer season, the stupidest law I have ever seen. If you do it with a .22 is one thing but to let people shoot small game with a big caliber rifle, where is there sign? graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/smack.gif

In my little group we always used .22 LR. We would not even dare take a .22 Mag. That would have been considered cheating!

Pat I know you have seen that in the regualation book it used to allow you to take small game with deer rifles?

I like a twelve gauge with 6 shot. Thats what I was raised up using. smile.gif
.22 rifle I have a old savage bolt action and a savage semi auto. I have not squirrel hunted with a shotgun in over twelve years. If you can't get a mess of squirrels with a .22 rifle then maybe you need to pratice more. Plus it is good pratice getting ready for deer season.
Not to start anything but squirrel hunting with a shotgun is about like deer hunting with a crossbow.LOL :D

New England Firearms Sportster .17 HMR with a Bushnell banner 6x18 scope.
Single shot, they don't run and I can use it for longer ranges.

Go ahead and lump me in with the crossbow hunters. :D Some of us old dudes can't see as well as we used to. I use the first gun I ever owned, a Stevens single shot 20 guage. Have killed untold numbers of squirrels with it since I was 14. For a rifle I use a 39a Marlin with a 4 or 6 power scope. I have killed a number of rabbits with a high powered rifle. If a sitting still head shot wasn't presented then I didn't shoot. Rabbit tastes as good as deer to me.

Mine is by far the Marlin 17VS 17HMR, topped with a Simmons AETEC 3.8x12x44AO in a BKL mount.

I like it because it shoots such tiny groups at 50 yards...

And the things it does to a squirrels head is amazing...

Mr.Chitlin, have you had the chance to check out the new 22LR necked down to 17cal.? If so, what do you think about it's potential as a squirrel gun? Or rabbit gun?

That is the 17 Mach 2. I have not seen one on the market yet, not sure if they are actually out. If not, they are supposed to be any time.
If it is anything like the 17 HMR, it should be devestating on small game. From what I read, it should run around 2200fps. My HMR chrono's a little over 2600 fps.
Looks like it might be a fun gun, the nice thing is that you should be able to pick up a replacement barrel for a 10/22 (which I have a couple of) and convert it in about 5 minutes. Everything else should work. Might just have to try one, heck, for a hundred bucks or so for a new barrel it would be worth it just to play with. graemlins/thumb.gif

I owned one of the first 17 HMRs, a ruger model 17 and it was a really nice looking rifle,,but it did not shoot worth a hoot,,,I will wait and see on the mach 2,,,I am into accuracy,,,I have a friend who is big into marlins, and he assured me his would shoot those small groups that to me is a requirment for any rimfire,,I see that apparently Mr. c. also has a shooter,,,by the way, what mounts are you useing there mr. c.???They look like quality mounts...
As you all know,,,squirrel season is right around the conner,,I can hardly wait,,,I love to hunt those little suckers,,,especially the greys.

I am with you X, I love hunting them especially if there are a bunch of them. When we do have a bunch I like hunting with my .22, I don't shoot as much as yall but I have killed a few with mine. graemlins/thumb.gif

X,
The mount on the 17 is a BKL Technologies (bkltech.com) mount. It is a one piece mount that is for grooved receivers and is rock solid. I have them on both my 17 Marlins, and am getting ready to order another one for the Marlin 25MN 22 mag. Here is a little closer pic...

Thats a new one on me,,Mr. C. it looks hell for stout,,,do the rings "turn in" or are they part of the bases?
Mr. Chitlin

It is a one piece unit, rings and all. Machined from aircraft grade aluminum, it is the most solid grooved receiver mount I have ever seen. A hair pricey at around $55 per set, but you pay for quality.

Black Widow TFII, 60@29, don't kill many, but its fun trying. One morning a few years back down at Bayou Deveiw I came up on two squirrel hunters. They said bow seasons not in yet. I said I know, I'm squirrel hunting. They laughed and ask if I had killed any. I said two, they said bulls%$#, I showed them and they said thats more than we've got. LOL

So you know any boys over at Blytheville that shoot the Black Widows?? I work with a guy over there that uses one. (I live in Jbro, too).
Just wondering...

Only traditional hunter I know from over that way is Larry Sanders. He works at Nucor, but lives around Monette. He did not shoot a Widow last time I talked to him, but it has been awhile.

Old box trap with a few pecans throwed in there. After you trap them dump in an old gunny sack and whack against a tree. Not shot up that way! graemlins/thumb.gif Naw....my old .22 and scope.

Paid $820.00 for mine in 98. They are a little more now. You thought the top compounds were pricey. Thing is you have to by a new compound every couple of years or yours will be obsolete. Recurves and longbows are already obsolete, but you really don't have to buy but one. Widows hold their value rather well by the way.

I've killed more limb rats with an old Model 94 Savage-Stevens in 410 gauge that one could count in day. Got it 1971 when you could actually buy cheap shells and the hickory trees were teaming with those little dudes back in the Black River Bottoms. Now days I prefer a .22 with hollow point in late fall and winter when a squirrel can see you forever but In the spring season and early fall I still love the 410ga especially when you can see them long before they can see you. There is nothing more exciting those little jokers "Tapp'n Tree's" in the morning. Like Jerry Clower refered to Coons "tapp'n tree's"....moving from one tree to another. Watching limbs dance in the dim early morning light then to slip-up on'em before they know what's go'in on. Haven't seen one in Iraq yet.
