How many of us do this and have you noticed the same thing I have in the past few years? That they seemto be more apt to move when they know where you are (like when your wearing blaze orange)?

My son and I open squirrel season every year. We love hunting the little buggers. Sometimes we hunt at Big Lake, sometimes up on our place in Sharp County, othertimes just here around Jonesboro. Seems to be mostly fox squirrels at Big Lake, mostly grays in the hills. We hunt with rimfires only, used to be 22 LR's and 22 Mags, now we hunt with the 17HMR's.

I love to squirrel hunt. Havent done as much since I started bow hunting, wish they would open it up earlier in the south. If those suckers see you where I am at then they are gone, they are always spooky down there. I hunt em in north texas, where no one seems to hunt em and you can walk right up on em and they dont spook.

C I love squirrel hunting, we need to get a board squirrel hunt up, or don't tell'em but maybe even a NEAB hunt up and kill'em and cook'em. I like eat'em bout as much as hunt'em. And I have been know to use my shotgun early when the leaves are thick, but if there is alot of'em I like using my 10/22. graemlins/thumb.gif

Yep, Dodge, I've been known to eat one or two of 'em too... graemlins/thumb.gif

Usually scatter gun it till the leaves fall then pick up the rimfire.

We can try it at sylamore if any of you want to.

That picture is hard on a fat boy, and do you have that camera mounted on your head?

We have been using the fish cooker and deep frying them out in my shop, making gravy, and loaf bread, dang I'm hungry again. We have taken all this stuff and cooked them on the tailgate man that is when they are good, out of the trees and into the grease. graemlins/thumb.gif

Mr. Chitlin
07-10-2004, 10:02 PM
This is the way we usually cook 'em. We slow cook 'em in gravy for about 2.5 hrs, add corn on the cob, cat head biscuits, mashed taters and white gravy. That's what keeps me in shape: round IS a shape, isn't it????

Earnhardt fan #1

Wife says the same thing Mr C.
Round is a shape!!!

DODGEMAN
07-10-2004, 10:12 PM
In our shape we are more aerodynamic, those guys with all the muscles and abbs you can see, that is just wind resistance.

I can deep fry those tree rats for about 20 minutes and you won't believe how tender they are, especially if they ain't old as X or MB. :D

deerhunter
07-10-2004, 11:38 PM
Dang good eat'n. I like to just pan fry them like chicken. That along with some fried taters, corn, pork'n beans and some good'ole buttermilk biscuits. graemlins/thumb.gif

fairweatherhunter
07-12-2004, 03:37 PM
I usually give 'em to my mother-in-law she uses a pressure-cooker, cooks them in the gravy....good eating. Heard about using the turkey fryer or fish cooker...how does that come out? I worry about them being tender.

SS

dadgum that looks good, I'm setting here with my mouth watering.

Dodgeman your right about them being good cooked outside. I've gone camping before just to squirrel hunt and they are fine fried in an iron skillet over a cooking fire.

We are talking about having a NEAB squirrel hunt somewhere up here and cooking them, but don't tell the other guys. I may not be able to hunt but I bet I can eat, and maybe even cook? graemlins/thumb.gif

Dodgeman - it those guys from the other parts of the states show up, we will probably have to kill their squirrels for them. graemlins/thumb.gif

I could set at the truck with my broke leg and kill more than they could. graemlins/thumb.gif If we depend on them we will have to make alot of gravey.

I'm sure old X could bring some sheep. :D

Squirrel huntin in the bottoms where I come from have always been a big event. A guy who gets his limit with a .22 consistently is a true woodsman. Squirrel huntin is a barometer on how skilled a hunter you are. JMO

Well, I'm still waiting for the time and date for the annual squirrel hunt and cook off,,,I have been saving back 8 .22 caliber long rifle rounds so I can kill all the law will allow..If however Dodgeman hunts like he types, well maybe all I need to bring is my appetite,,,but then if my hunch is right maybe I better save up 8 more .22 long rifle shells!!!! ;)

I'd hate for the lad to have to cook and not have any for himself,,,,He could have the front legs off of mine,,,if they were real old squirrels...I hope we don't have to have a search party go looking for him!!!! graemlins/thumb.gif

DODGEMAN

First of all X that is supposed to be a NEAB hunt, and I can understand if you would like to move up here between me and deerhunter, just so you can participate in our annual squirrel hunt.

As far as you only bringing 8 .22 shells, I would suggest you pretend you are going praire dog hunting, what did you say you took 1,000 rounds. I figure if I have to use my crutches I can probably still kill more than you. Do you even know how to hunt squirrels on flat ground? graemlins/smack.gif

Less say the 4 that kills the least must clean them, the ones that kill the most just sits around and tell everyone else what they are doing wrong and the ones of us that kill the most get to do all the sampling(I am good at that), and the ones in the middle do the cooking. graemlins/thumb.gif

DODGEMAN
08-02-2004, 05:27 PM
No for real guys we would really like to have a hunt and cooking somewhere, and yes we would want everyone to come, even the YCB. How many would like to do this? What would be a good place? There are a few of us that do it around here every year, we bring them back to the shop clean them, deep fry'em, make gravy, with loaf bread, dang I am hungry? graemlins/smack.gif

xring
08-02-2004, 06:13 PM
Dodgeman, I've never hunted your woods,,,that would be a handicap, I don't get around to good, and that is a handicap,,,but You could talk me into a small bet,,,lets say .22 rifles only,,,no, rimfires only for those of you who shoot the magnums or the new .17s,,only head shots counts and limit the # of shells allowed each hunter,,,,whatta ya say???? I'm easy,,,,but I could be talked into playing this game... ;)

DODGEMAN
08-02-2004, 07:10 PM
That sounds good, I figure my rifle is worth more than yours, and I hate taking things from old people. But if I have to hunt on cruthes?, I guess that would make us about even. We will have to wait and see, I might spot you a couple. graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/thumb.gif

Man if this comes together, I don't care what you bring as long as we kill enough to eat. graemlins/thumb.gif If a bunch of those old guys come I may have to bring my shotgun so I can kill enough for all those blind guys. I am just that kinda buy. graemlins/thumb.gif

Cjdavis, read my post again,,,I welcomed all rimfire rounds,,,,This would be a fun squirrel hunt,,don't you think,,,maybe everyone chip in a few bucks,,,,winner takes all...I have no problems with any rimfire,,,besides the 17 HMRs would have little or no advantage early in the season due to the vegatation,,,in my opinion...I would probally shoot standard velocity long rifles, so speed is not high on my list of "MUSTS" for a hunt of this sort,,,,,xring

xring
08-02-2004, 10:28 PM
I also believe that head shots should count but a body hit would only count as 1/2,,,or two body hit squirrels would count as only one kill, this should keep anyone from dropping a body hit squirrel,,,,like I said, 10 rounds each,,,,I like it....

Cjdavis618

Count me in, I need to wear out the barrel a little. It's to shiny. :D Who's got squirrels that need thinin?

There are a few that I despise during deer season, but not enough to justify a group.

X if you make it a competition for everyone we won't have enough to cook? I don't want to come out with a win over you and not have enough for everyone one to eat, and I don't want to have to go back in the woods and kill two or three more limits? Where is your sign? graemlins/smack.gif graemlins/thumb.gif

By the way I think Chris' 3000 acres would be a fine place for the hunt don't you X?

If I play, it will have to be in flat lands, I don't get around well enough to haul it up over the mountains,,,,,I'd just as soon hunt anyplace that is reasonably flat,,,,I don't care, name the place,,I'd do my best to be there,,,

Yeah, Dodgeman, your .22 is probally better than mine,,,this is an old hand me down,,,but it will keep them all in a baseball at 25 yds...Oh, but we ain't hunting baseballs are we????

Yall probally going to whup up on me,,,but I'll try it anyway. Let me know when yall decide, cause I have to wrap some new wire around the pistol grip and weld the sights back on ole "BETSY" ;)

Greys or fox squirrels??? I think by limiting the ammo to 10 rounds it wouldn't matter much,,I mean, If there are plenty of squirrels, everyone should get to use their 10 shots anyway,,,,and the head shots,,,,well I think it would be a ton of fun...

DODGEMAN
08-02-2004, 11:13 PM
See it was all going to be fun until someone wanted to start betting. How about $2.00 a person, hunt with what you want to, no limit on shells, and first one back to the cooking spot with 8 the quickest or back with the most if there aren't any squirrels everyone back by 10:00, takes the money? What do you think? graemlins/thumb.gif

Cjdavis618

X, Most of our land is for the most part flat, not steep mountian hillsides or anything. But there are some big hills scattered out in the area.

It would be lots of fun. When should we do this?

DODGEMAN
08-02-2004, 11:22 PM

These are the season dates.

What do you think, Oct down here or Sept up there?

I didn't think about you being in the southern zone, if it is early it will have to be in the northern zone. We can't do October because everyone will be deerhunting. Man that one got you off the hook, maybe your place in November? We can look into a public place with some table so we will have a good place to cook and eat. graemlins/thumb.gif

Cjdavis618
08-03-2004, 10:55 AM
Can't do that in Nov here. Deer season is open and I will be there for that. Our modern gun season ends Dec 12. So anytime after that is good for me.

We are building a cookhouse down here.

If yall feel like losing in a squirrel hunt then count me in for february. I think xring has the right idea of going out there with 10 rounds. That time of year would be perfect for taking the 22 or 17. Best shooter wins, plus will help keep the home team somewhat honest.

DODGEMAN
08-04-2004, 12:10 AM
I would probably be able to get around better in Feb. but I think we will kill more in Sept. I am with you on the 10 shot thing, we want to kill some and get out of the woods so we can clean'em, cook'em, and eat'em before 1 or 2:00. What do you think? graemlins/thumb.gif

rjet
08-04-2004, 12:39 AM
Sept or Feb sounds good. Eatin squirrels by 1 or 2....priceless. Might ought to bring some ribeyes and 1 tbone if too many neab's show up though. Cause you know they wont contribute to the kill/taking(politically correct) of squirrels. :D

Cjdavis618
08-04-2004, 01:06 AM
Ahh, tasting the meat already. Where we goin'?

Or, we can have 2. I know you neabs will want a rematch. graemlins/thumb.gif

xring
08-04-2004, 07:24 AM
Somehow we will have to limit the # of NEABs at the get together,,,If not, we won't be able to kill enough to feed ourselves and those slackers,,,,I think you could figure that we would kill 9.8 squirrels per hunter,,,,while the NEABs would probally average 1.9 squirrels per hunter.....of course I'm figureing that on the 10 rounds per hunter,,,,,Why, you can look at them boys and tell they are better at eating than they are at provideing!!!!The reason I put us down so much ( 9.8 ) I hate to admit it but I missed one last year,,,but heck,,,he was small,,,you know about half grown,,,or as I prefer to call them,,,Fryers!!!

DODGEMAN
08-04-2004, 08:00 AM
Yall are killing me, you can tell by our physic that we eat well, so you know we must hunt well. Believe me I can put the starvation bead on them when necessary. I can't speak for the other boys, but if there are squirrels out there I can get, it is the walking thing I am unsure about at this point? But I am glad to see more people wanting to do this, I think it would be fun. Who else would like to do this and when and where? graemlins/thumb.gif

What is your favorite method for squirrel hunting,,,do you still hunt,,,sit and wait at mast trees,,,slow still hunt or fast,,,,The reason I ask is that I know some hunters that hunt so fast(sucessfully) that they seem to be in a hurry to finish the morning or evening hunt.
Of course those that hunt in this fashion are dyed in the wool scattergunners,,,,and also are very familar with the area,,,mast trees and water and where the squirrels should be and what they are presently feeding on...This is a real advantage for any species that you hunt,,especially squirrels.....just curious.

Nothin' like a good mast tree and a good sittin' stool for this ole back of mine.

But when I'm able I like to hunt bushy tails like rjet, easin' ever so slowly through the woods, wearin' full camo, including gloves and face mask. The full camo gets me closer to the squirrels and as a bonus keeps a whole bunch of those little biting critters at bay.

Love to hunt on a calm day after the leaves have died and before they all fall. Seems like a man can hear a squirrel jump a mile away on those kinds of days! Can hear them snakes slidin' across the ground better too!!!!!!!!!! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/bjgobble/Rsnake.gif

I let the squirrels dictate how fast I hunt. A lot of times I'll hunt "out" of them. It's time to back-track. I try to stay out of the big wide-open timber, preferring a little more understory to slip around in. I've come up on a shagbark before with hulls raining down, and 4 or 5 squirrels in it. I've gotten a crick in my neck several times trying to find one in a hicker-nut tree! :D

Cut the head and feet off then cut across the back and pull both ways. The tails and guts are left in the woods since I gut mine once they are shot. This also prevents any live squirrels in the game bag or on the belt.

Back when I was a teenager hunting in Indiana with a friend. He shot a big fox squirrel with his .410 shotgun. I asked him if he was going to gut it and he said no he would wait till he got home. So he clipped it onto his holder on his belt and we split up to continue hunting. It wasn't long until I heard him a hollaring and cussing. I ran over to him and found him rolling around on the ground fighting with this squirrel. By the time we got that thing killed and gutted this time my friends right leg was a bloody mess and pants shredded. Form that day on he started gutting his squirrels once they were shot and before clipping them onto his belt.

We all know you are a little embarrased about the situation dodgeman, go ahead and hunt. Your right about kids today. Most of them skip squirrel hunting, and that's where you learn all your basics about woodsmanship. They just get propped up in a big heated tower stand that looks over a feed trough! And most of the deer they're hunting have already been photograghed and named! I'm just waiting for when they're gonna come up with a way to start tagging them! Now that's hunting.

The best squirrel dog I was ever involved with was the pup of a bitch that my mom owned. He started out treeing cats around the house on his own, so we started shooting 'em out and "good-dogging" him for it. This led into squirrels. The most we killed with him was 36 one day. I'm really not a "dog man", but I sure miss him. Great fun!

I don't care how many we all kill as long as we have enough to cook for everyone. You can do it like deerhunting, bring your dove chair go out find some feed trees and sit, they will come.

Duh,,,,Duh,,Whats up Doc!!!! I haven't heard any squirrel talk in a few days now????

Is it still on??? I have to say, if I could still hear, this would probally be my favorite hunting,,,Have you ever went in the woods just at daylight after a brief shower,,,heard the squirrels jumping from one limb to another and the leaves in the trees wet,,it would look like it had started raining again, boy that was easy pickings...Don't you hate to get into a bunch of those 3/4 grown greys,,,take them home and split
them, fry them slow,,,cook some biscuts and gravy,,,a jug of iced tea,,,,maybe some cobbler and icecream for dessert!!!

X we have a few old guns around here you need to see on old .22 pump, and some old double barrels. X have you ever seen the old .30-30 that came with some new Dodge trucks in '84, the trucks were Marksmans?

No, I never knew they were giving rifles to people to get them to buy dodges,,,That might be grounds for a lawsuit,,,everyone knows you gotta be crazy to buy a dodge,,,and its illegal to sell a gun to an crazy person!!!!

Boy those squirrels are jumping out of the trees around here this evening,,,wish it was season!!!

DODGEMAN

I have no idea I started the count and no one would continue it. We probably need to start a new thread, since is is just a little less than a month away, I guess some will have to wait till it is a little closer then ask. We can wait then make big plans since Efan is buying, did I mention he is a heck of a guy. If someone wants to go through Malvern, fisherman's wife if making me a pie. graemlins/thumb.gif

You would eat my pie, and not bring a brother any, I don't mind you sampling it, just so I know it is ok for me to eat, but eat the whole thing, before Benton. graemlins/smack.gif
