I am too old and beat up to chase coon dogs in the dark, but I sure love to hear them bawl. Do any of you folks run mountain cur or blackmouth cur dogs?

Hey Marc, I didn't tell you about this past weekend, did I? It was horrid...LOL! I was so embarassed! Even treed a possum, and Jake backed it. Oh well, him and Drum finally got by theirself late Saturday, split 20 yards, and both had a coon.

Marcus
10-28-2003, 11:16 AM
I would like to see the big brother of your second picture this weekend... ;)

I am planning on bowhunting all weekend. Marshall has a hunt Saturday night. Come on up you weenieeeeee... :D

Jake backed a possum? It really don't look good for Pearl & Jake now... redface.gif

BnTMan
10-28-2003, 11:34 AM
Yeah, another dog and Drum treed, and about 75 yards from the tree Jake hits it. When I got close enough to see, he was running around. Neither Drum nor the other dog could find it...LOL! I walk in and Jake finally gets up on this "pole", and it's about 6 foot high. It was a bad mistake on Jake's part, he left the country after that...LOL!

Anybody of you coonhunters still here?

Hey Marc...

Made 4 trees Friday with Jake and Maggie. Two obvious dens, one questionable tree (huge Oak, just of questionable origin), and one coon. Saturday I hunted Maggie alone. Four trees, no tracks, no coon...LOL! They were all huge Oaks though...;)

I tried to bowhunt this weekend but, it got too hot so I just laid around all weekend... :D I did guide a cast at the hunt Saturday night.

Gonna get my pup out tonight and see what happens. She almost treed a coon the other night by herself... smile.gif She was across a slew form me and I could see the coon sitting up but, she couldn't settle on the tree.

BnTMan
11-03-2003, 03:58 PM
Marc, did I tell you about weekend before last? Thirteen trees, and never saw a coon. Of course, I have a disclaimer though, my dogs weren't the only ones in the woods...LOL! They were 90% legit circles, but we should have seen some coon all the same. Jake and Drum got treed right at the end by themselves and were split 20 yards, and both with coon. I think I'm taking my pup out tonight too. We'll go for a pup hunt some night when you get ready.

Flatlander, we had a short deer chase two weeks ago. We also stood around and watched 6 deer walk right up to us while this was going on. I've seen more bucks at night this year than I can remember, and fawn. I too was gonna bowhunt this weekend, but it was just too hot!

I hunted my 11 month old pup night before last, and it was a puppy night too. First dump never got a bark, but he did hunt. Next dump, he got in, got struck, located and went on, and then left out of the country. He wasn't barking deer, and it wasn't a blistering track, but it crossed two pastures, and he quit it. Don't know. Anyway, one more drop, and he got on a rough track and ended up treed on a big Oak. Maybe it was there, maybe not, but there were a ton of turkeys flopping around, and he could have possibly treed on one of those. Who knows with pups...

flatlander
11-07-2003, 02:56 PM
Well i guess I am going to lay them old hounds up for a night or two.I guess I am getting ready to head back to camp. best of luck Come see me in the flats.

BnTMan
11-10-2003, 09:12 AM
Yeah, me too. I haven't been bowhunting yet, and I intend to get started this weekend and kinda see what's going on. If I missed all the action, I'll just wait till the next round, and get back to the hounds...

flatlander
11-12-2003, 12:10 PM
what a night.. lost my tracking collar it fell off the collar.I guess it was time because the battiers went dead this morin and I couldnt get get a beep.Found the dog treed so I got the dog.tough night.

BnTMan

I had a so-so weekend. I went up to bowhunt, but either it just wasn't right, or the thing has gone from me, because my heart just wasn't in it yet. I ran dogs all weekend. Made 3 trees Friday and seen one. My pup treed super. Went with some guys Saturday, and my pup treed one the other dogs didn't know was there, but didn't stick and went to them. We never looked at a coon. We made two trees last night and saw one. Seems like they are hitting good tracks, and they just blow up, and it takes them forever to set up a tree.

flatlander
11-17-2003, 09:27 AM
The rut not starting to trickle up there is it?

BnTMan
11-17-2003, 01:29 PM
Which game, coon or deer? LOL!

I haven't seen a sign of either really. The young buck I saw didn't look like he was interested in much of anything. I guess that's what sparked my disinterest. I like for the bucks to be fired up, then I can get fired up. Just didn't see it. Maybe I missed it. Traditionally, however, most of the activity I've seen has been closer to Thanksgiving, but things seem to have changed over the past few years.

It's usually late December or January before we seen coon rutting hard, although they claim it starting late November around here. I think it's used as a crutch way too much. I mean, coon don't rut from mid-November till mid-February...LOL!

flatlander
11-17-2003, 02:24 PM
No but thats a good one to use on a long cold track. The deer down here are checking scrapes I shot a little six point that was checking one. The coon on the other hand are just as happy to stay in the pecans or pin oaks everybody in the same tree. no coon rut in foreman.

BnTMan

Randy, I've not had much dealing, nor do I know many people that do deal with curs myself. I've only been around registered hounds, although I do have a registered Catahoula right now. I'll let you know if I hear of anything though.

flatlander
11-19-2003, 09:32 AM
Hey Randy you can get a copy of FULL CRY ON line they have all the cur ads you probly could find some one close to you.Their is a man named Raymond Horn that lives by me that has hunted curs for years wouldnt hunt any thing else.Good to have you on board keep us informed.

Well, my pup had better luck deerhunting this weekend than I did...LOL! He struck one about 15 seconds off the leash. Run it about 1/2 to 3/4 a mile and quit. Hushed a little while, got struck, fell treed and had a coon. He was proud of that deer for a little while. I've got to get my Tri-tronics fixed quick...

Hey Marc, sorry we didn't look at more coon last night. Jake has really gotten bad on his treeing over the past month or two. I need to lay him up I guess, or hunt him alone. And you was wanting a picture of a B & T actually treeing a coon so bad...

Good luck with the Plott. I think she'll serve your purpose. Oh wait, you didn't want that public did you? LOL!

Marcus
11-26-2003, 10:52 AM
Shhhh.... Don't say that too loud...

I had a good time last night. O' and about the picture... Do I need to bring a caged coon over... :D

I'll go get my sportsman pass so we can hunt the Camp. Need to go in there when I get my pup started and we can knock several down to them.

Gonna take the plott out Thursday & Friday night at Marshall. You should come up and hunt... tongue.gif

Caged coon, I hadn't thought of that. I've got pictures of all 3 coon Jake's ever treed...

I need to lay him up, or not give him any coon for a while I think.

I was thinking about slipping over there tonight by myself, but I'd probably end up being over there all night...

Just thought I would drop you guys a line and tell you about a young dog We are hunting. Seems that he started young treeing a lot of coon early then he went to trashin so the owners went to beating ,Boy that must have really worked he quit treeing and you couldnt get him to go around a tree. last night I looked at two coons with him by himself. It took us three weeks to get this dog to trust us enought that he would tree and stay hooked.Long story and to make it short, we now own the dog, will finish the dog out, some time you have to be smarter than the dog IF you dont know how to train a dog pay some one who does.PS Maybe you will learn something along the way

Anyone going to White River NWR for the annual 2 week coonhunting bonanza? I'm going for the first time tomorrow night, and I'm looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about it, and the guy I'm going with don't know much. It will probably be fubar, and I'll probably still be there Friday afternoon trying to get to the dogs...LOL! We'll see...

And as for my recent hunt at the big Area, I was over there all night...LOL! It started pouring, and every little road I took to try and get out was flooded. I made it home about 3:00 am...

I posted a picture of Drum. He sure looked good last night. I wish I would have had more room to back up and center him in the camera. That would have been an awsome picture. We'll get some more tomorrow night if we can luck up on a dumb coon.

Ive been denned up for a while you guys treeing any What do you think about a limit on the number of coon a night ? you may not think you have a problem in your area we sure do in my neck of the woods.

Marcus
01-05-2004, 04:54 PM
Flatlander,

Where are you from? I just got back from hunting Pond Creek. Had a dog w/ me to go hunt'n also. If you were close we should have gotten together for a drop.

We hardly ever kill more than a coon a night so a limit on them doesn't really bother us.

BnTMan
01-07-2004, 09:57 AM
There is no limit right now. I seldom take more than one myself.

Been treeing a few. Looked at 7 in the last 4 trips with my old dog. Only 1 den, the rest had coon. Not to bad for this time of year, especially with all the leaves off... ;)

Marcus
01-07-2004, 10:43 AM
They had 4 dogs at the hunt last night. One den tree during the hunt and one after. You should have been entered up... ;)

BnTMan
01-07-2004, 03:31 PM
Like I said last night, some of those "tree monsters"(I won't mention any breeds... ;) ) would have gobbled his last tree up like flies on doo-doo...

I guess we did do pretty good though. Supposed to go tonight. I may carry the young dog. It's getting to where I dread cutting him loose just like his half-brother...LOL!

Janney wouldn't stand today. Not even close. Hopefully we didn't miss it...

what are we going to do about the numbers at the hunts .In southwest ark if you have ten dog total you had a good hunt.WE have free food at most of our hunts chilli, stew, etc.WE got to get the people back out.

BnTMan

Well, I don't see it happening flatlander. It's either 3 or 4 hunts a month statewide, and have bigger hunts, or 10 or 12 statewide and have smaller. That's not even counting PKC who will have 20 or 30 a month. The trend seems to be towards more hunt's with less attendance. However, we've had very good turnouts last year at the Conway club. Over 40 dogs several times.

I think flatlander is talking about me, I lived over at Nashville in Howard county and the coons were running us off the place. It wasn't nothing to see a dozen a night in the back yard. They would run the little gray foxes something awful. Anyhow, as a varmint shooter I have been trying to get it legal to hunt varmints at night without a dog, you know, using a squeeler for bobcat, coyotes, coons, fox, and so on. (One time in Nashville I squeeled and had a big old coon come up on one end of a log and a gray fox on the other at the same time) You hound men have got the fix in with the fish and game folks cause I can't call at night because I have to have a dog with me. I guess I could put a blackmouth cur pup in my pocket and be legal. I know it don't seem quite christian to shoot a coon without a pack of hound baying at it, but as thick as coons are right now, I don't see how it could hurt, seeing as how they do raise hell with quail and duck and turkey nests.

Chuck from arkansaw

And yes flatlander I have et a coon more than once.

flatlander

Chuck from arkansaw
01-14-2004, 11:58 AM
Flatlander, I am not in a position to afford a dog right now, but have my heart set on a blackmouth cur when I do get one. I like to squirrel hunt, and the places I have available require a dog that will fetch a downed squirrel. I have heard a blackmouth will do just about everything, including retreiving ducks so it shouldn't be too hard to teach one to tree a squirrel and then bring it to the shooter.

Congratulations Flatlander! I put my young dog in a hunt this weekend against my better judgment, but at the urging of some others, and for lack of anything better to do. It was a disappointing performance to say the least, and if he had performed to half of his capability, it would have been interesting, as the cast was wide open. It was discouraging none the less...

I use to go 3 or 4 nights a week and got a traveling job and couldnt keep my ole blue ticks no more . had to get ride of them. But back then coons were not as thick.Still when I heard my ole jip change over to a steady chop it made my hair stand up. She wouldnt run a deer and that made it so much better.maybe some day i can get back into it again. it was such a good sport that i looked forward to doing.Guys enjoy it. Things like that are getting to be a dieing breed. Its kind of sad. smile.gif

Flatlander,

Congrats on your 1st place with your young dog. He must be a nice hound. My young dog is not doing much still but, I bought a 5 year old female that I am well pleased w/ so far. She may not win a thing in the hunts but she seems to be staight and is treeing coons on a consistant basis. That is what I was looking for.

Been having some rough hunts of late. Young dog still up and down. Super one night, sorry the next. My old dog even got in on the game, and ran some junk the other night. Ended up trying to cover his butt, and treed in a barn beside someone's house. I couldn't get to him, and he left when I called him and got treed another 3/4 from there. He did do a nice job on a coon early.

Marcus has a nice gyp now. I'm just afraid she's gonna get knocked down a notch or two by Jake tonight... :D

See ya' tonight Marc...

I've never been coon hunting but I have a question, when you go hunting how long do you usually stay out and what time of the year is best?

Marcus
02-11-2004, 10:21 AM
Deerhunter,

I'm not an all night hunter. I usually just go for 2-3 hours and head home. Sometimes my dog has other plans though.... graemlins/smack.gif

My favorite time to hunt is in the Spring when the frogs start croking. The weather is usually better and the coons stir about every night. Alot of people like it this time of year because the coons are in rut and you can have some real races.

BnTMan,

I don't know about Jake taking my new dog down a couple of notches last night, But I sure did... :D graemlins/smack.gif

flatlander
02-11-2004, 10:24 AM
Hey Deer hunter i like the spring time of year the kittens are easy to tree, but a cold clear dec night is hard to beat.
BnT man stay with him put some ground under his feet and some fur on his head. Marcus dont cut him no slack.

BnTMan
02-11-2004, 03:39 PM
Well, bad call aside Marc, you were still beat. But you were in better shape than me, that's for sure! It was obvious at the first tree Jake wasn't taking anyone down a notch but me...LOL!I'm just glad the rumors didn't manifest themselves... ;)

I like spring too, although a lot of coon are gone or wary, they still stir good. I like this time of year too because you can plainly see if there's a coon there or not.. graemlins/thumb.gif

Actually, I like something about hunting in each season, except for the 80 degree nights...

Had a good hunt last night, although the pup didn't look super. He ran some junk, but ended up split with a coon. He had first and first on a den, and he left a tree or two graemlins/smack.gif , and my buddies dog had a coon. We looked 3, and seen 4 or 5 cross the road. Don't know what's up with his leaving trees. He left about 6 last weekend hunting alone. I finally caught him on a tree with a coon...

Deerhunter, you really need to try this sport. Talk about excitement. There's nothing like going out with some of your buddies and hearing your dog strike first or hear it treeing. Sure does get the adrenaline flowing. This is a big sport and if you think deer hunting can get expensive, just talk to some of the real coon hunters out there. I quit running walkers about 20 years ago, but have been a few times with some of my old buddies. I don't think it ever leaves your blood. Good luck!

Reason I said that is because I used to hunt with a fella who coon hunted every nite of the week with or with out a gun he loved it so much I talked to him a few weeks a go and he commented that he gave it up because it wasn't worth the effert anymore But it truely is a great sport that is falling because of the lack of interest from younger generations

I go coon hunting at least twice a week. I rarely see anyone coonhunting, Im not complaining but you hate to see a sport die. I think there is less hunting just because there are less places to go. you have to have a large area to coonhunt. and you would rather it not be a pine thicket, Im not saying there isnt coons in there but who wants to chase them through it!!!!

Ya are right the sport of coon hunting is dieing. I coon hunt alot and the guys that got me and my cousin in it has both quit now. One is my grandpa and i understand why he dont and the other hasnt had a dog worth takin since his old dog got lost a couple years back. Also your right on no one wants to chase the dogs through pine thickets. We have on a couple occasions and there is coons there but most of our woods has been cut. There's still a few places around that we can hunt and get some treed tho

what's the best way to use - release - a caged coon for training a dog?
anyone got tricks they like to use?

Wet the coon good so he leaves a nice strong scent trail. If this is the first time the hound is being worked with a coon ur turning lose its best to let him see the coon leave the cage give the coon a good head start. If the hound can already sum what run a track a little just wet the coon good release it then turn the hound out the dog box. Find you a field that joins sum good timber and turn the coon lose a couple hundred yards back out in the field letting it run toward the timber. Try timing it to were about the time the coon just reaches the timber the hound isnt far behind so theres a good chance the hound relizing the coon went up a tree. I've got 2 I caught in cages last night to work with my new hound tonight.

Sounds fun! I've been hitting the timber atleast 4 nights a week. Seen 7 last night but of course my hounds didnt tree them all. Treed 2. Coons were really moving last night. The fog really sit in on me made it alittle interesting. My redbone is starting to come around pretty nice. She has her off nights sumtimes to were she seems to cant line a track out right but shes learning. I aquired a walker a couple weeks ago that didnt no alot in terms of running and treeing coons but shes picking up really fast from the redbone... Last night she had the coon tree before ole red could figer out wich way it went.
All and all it was a good night in the timber.

four of us went last sat. night - three young guys (17,19,19) and me (old man). Im the only one with dogs. I have two Walkers. We let the dogs loose on a dirt road that separated a cutover and a thick stand of woods. The dogs struck within 5min. "soup" my male walker has a deep, low, long bark.
"Sweet" the smaller female, has a long, higher pitch, bugle bark. They trailed and worked around for about 30min. before Sweet sat down hard on tree. Soup was only a few seconds behind. The tree was about a quarter off the dirt road and about a mile from where we started. It was a pretty tough walk through the underbrush and spider webs. I noticed it alot more coming out than going in to the tree. They treed in a big oak, so thick with leaves we couldn't see all the way to the top. We looked the tree over for the better part of thirty minutes. I tried all the old tricks to get coon look our way nothing worked. We finally praised the dogs - hooked them up with walking chains and headed out of the woods. For this time of year - It was great!!!!

I squirrel hunt with dogs and coon hunt with dogs. It would be hard for me to say which I prefer. I do like an open trailing dog at night, and its been hard to find a cur to suite me on the trail and tree. I am starting to dabble with hounds, still feeling my way through that. Took me a while to find the curs I liked, and figure it will do the same for hounds. Any of ya'll around Paragould?

I hunt on Black river too, actually live near Lafe - never hunted on the Renyo sode though. My gyp just came in heat, so I'm outa comission for the next few weeks. Might try to get up with you some time if you wouldn't mind the company. My gyp is straight and is running her own coon, treeing with other dogs, just aint quite doing it by herself yet. It is a Walker - don't know if you willing to hunt with one of them .
